Wondering what others have used on the D series hood to protect the decals on the manifold side. They originally had some sort of fabric material. Maybe asbestos? Any ideas? Thanks.

Didn't know they did that but I've never been around a D series. Dynamat comes to mind for a current material unless there is a reproduction of it somewhere

Google automotive heat shield. It's self adhesive and should work fine.

I just bought a roll of furnace reflective tape at Menards. Easy to stick under the hood and should protect the paint.

Hmmm... that's interesting. Didn't know the "D" series Tractors had a heat problem on the manifold side where the hood gets hot. Well, ya learn somethin' here everyday! Steve@B&B

We're talking series 3 and 4 D-17's with the oval muffler for sure. I don't remember any of the older round mufflers having anything. You'll see those nice 4 inch wide decals start to shrivel up in that area if used to plow with. The oval muffler was generally glow red at night when plowing.

I remember my Dad plowing and getting off to light a cigarette off the manifold on his WD45.

The oval mufflers were painted black. Wherever they turned red at night while plowing, burned off that paint and left them white. The red glow was best seen when headlights were turned off.

For gasoline engines, check first that its distributor's advance weights are freed-up. And then push it's timing "before" by 4-5degrees. It riches up the fuel mixture enough to drastically cool down exhaust temps & it will increase power. Here's a 2018 thread about it.
