Hello Gentlemen,

I ready to get rebuild parts, cylinder kit, rod bearings, head gasket set, and oil pan gasket for my 1951 HD5G.  Would you have a recommended supplier?  Is it possible to get the pistons and rings already installed in the cylinder sleeve?  Removing the piston rod bushing looks formidable.  Can it be beaten out? The cap looks solid and immovable.

Are special tools needed to install new rings and get the piston rod separated?

The wrist pin end caps are Tin seals, that is the reason are dished when installed.  If replace the pistons will need the seal installer, Drive them to seat them ONE SINGLE BLOW then use a vacuum gun with a suction cup to test them, they leak knock them out try another.  Reason being the seal can displace oil to the airbox, can set up for a runaway engine, will also pressurize the crankcase also leading to excessive oil spewing.

Thanks for the heads up. Another learning curve to do in one big gulp.  It would be nice if all that was preinstalled.  No end to the challenges.

Look up bus grease monkey on youtube  he has several videos where he overhauls 6 - 71 s  they are the same as yours but with 4 more cylinders  he explains what to look for and what not to do

I went with T pistons and liners on my 2-71 - mainly I had extras from past work . 
Detroit Diesel dealer was cheapest for gasket set and other parts . HV7 injectors I bought rebuilt from Truck Dealer as I snow plowed for them and had account - 1/2 price of what others wanted for rebuilt injectors

Two basic piston types, Trunk and Crosshead.  Trunk are all one piece as you showed, Crosshead are two piece with a replaceable skirt to a piston crown, different styles altogether as far as engine Needs and periods of build.

I'm getting ready to put her back together.  Should the pistons go into the liner before inserting it into the block or after?  The top shell rod bearings should be installed before liner goes into block?

Pistons install from BOTTOM of sleeves, If have a liner stuffer is easier than a ring compressor but compressor will work.  Sleeves with pistons are inserted as a assembly and should be a snug slip fit.  If drop in and bounce will pull apart under heavy load.  Trial fit the sleeves before get too carried away.

It seems working around the crank shaft with liner and compressor would be so tight as to be impossible.  It is possible?

Dry fit then remove sleeves, Load on the bench then reinstall as assemblies.  Will notice the sleeves have a chamfer on lower lip, NOT on upper.
