Working on a Wisconsin AGND 1 cylinder engine with FM magneto, need to know how to set timing, cannot see the timing marks on engine as it has a gear box attached.   My question is with engine at top of compression stroke where should the magneto be set.  Is it just before the snap or after??  Thanks, Tim

on most motors, the mag snaps at TDC.... when running the advance will kick in and fire a 20 deg before ( or similar).
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

if you get the static too much before TDC, it will kick backward when it fires.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

Tim,
I can't help ya with where the timing should be, but the impulse coupler's lag angle on that particular engine is 20 degrees. Steve is on the money with that. That particular engine uses a Fairbanks Morse  "X" series Magneto. ( FMXD1B7R-1 )  CCW rotation.

Thanks for the replies,  finally got to see the timing mark on engine using a mirror and flashlight, got the mag installed with timing marks lined up after numerous tries.  Haven't got it to run yet, thinking the compression might be low,  looks like rain any minute so will wait until better weather.  Thanks again,  Tim
