Was looking through some Allis D17 literature this afternoon and ran across a interesting find. Allis offered auxiliary high volume hydraulic system, that mounted the pump on the belt pulley drive with a supply tank mounted to the right hand fender.  I was wondering if anyone ever seen  a D17 with this factory setup on series 1 thru 3 D17? Now that would be a collectors find.

Many years ago I saw 1 at a Missouri tractor show. I did not know they came from the factory. I did think someone did a good job painting it. Its been years.

You'd still loose hyd when you use the clutch.  I'd much rather have the front mounted pump they offered with the 400 series loader.

I have either 1959 or 1960 literature that shows that as an option on the D17. Don't know if it was also an option on a D14 or D15 but I'd think so because it would pretty much be identical in that area. This has been discussed before some years back.

Knew of it, never seen one. Thought about building one. I like how the tank mounts on the floor like that but like Aaron, I would use a front mount pump and mike the lines to and from the pump out of steel tubing so you can bend them nice and do a nice clean install. I HATE hoses hanging all over the place.

That's a neat accessory, but I'm certain it was uncomfortable in operation.  The heat off that hydraulic tank would be just fine by your hip in the winter, but it'd be an uncomfortable nightmare in the summer.... and as Aaron noted... unless they changed some parts in the clutch area (to make that pick point live bevel gears) it'd be same as the integrated system, the only difference would be volume/pressure being suited for newer attachments, and additional circuits.

But the important point here, is that they were in process of improvement... this cut-sheet proves that they recognized need, and because of the mounting position of the valve controls, had become very aware of the ergonomics of operation... having the control handles right underneath your right hand is perfect, and placing the valve body to the rear means there's nothing directly above your knee (valve mounted forward).  One other problem I see with that tank, is that the space down to the right footboard is already a bit cramped when I'm wearing my insulated coveralls and Mickey Mouse boots...  the presence of the tank would certainly make getting into and out of the operating position more difficult.

It's clear to me that the engineers and marketers saw the future coming.  The Series IV was the immediate future.

A much better "live" hydraulic system can be fabricated utilizing the existing hydraulic sump on the tractor (drill/tap 3/4" pipe thread hole at the left front side corner of the cast iron sump pan), a front mounted "live" pump (or a belt driven under-the-hood pump), and a complete hydraulic valve stack assembly, including the levers from a D-17IV, 170-175-180-185 sourced out of a salvage yard. It doesn't get any better than this and the remote valves have a float position. The only advantage of this rarely purchased D-17 option was the ability to disengage the belt pulley drive when not needed to save HP and fuel.
