I need to add oil to my D17 transmission. What weight oil should I use. thanks, gregjo1948

Others will pipe in soon, but I use 'universal tractor hydraulic' oil for every thing BUT the engine(SAE30) in all my D-14s.

All series of D-17's used 80/90 wt gear oil. It may have been changed at some time in the last 50 or 60 years, so it might have something else in it like modern hydraulic/transmission oil, I have no idea. ANY TYPE OF OIL IS BETTER THAN BEING LOW ON OIL. To change the trans oil will take about 6 gallons of new to refill.

They came out with 80-90 and later Allis Chalmers came out with a "Servise Bulletin" saying to change everything except the final drives to "821 oil" or UHTF .

They said you COULD change to the newer type oil if you wanted to, but it wasn't mandatory. The oil type change really came with the 190XT's when they were updating transmissions and differentials. A-C was trying to help the Customer ( and dealers) by making it simple and have only one kind of oil on the farm, so if you needed the 821XL oil for a 190XT, you COULD use it in your older D-17.

...……...……. I will have to look it up , I have a whole stack of servise bulletins, but I do remember there reason for changing it to 821 oil in the D series tractors was 80-90 oil created sludge that was hard on the "power director" clutches.

BUT, the Power Director clutches ain't the transmission. Any S4 D-17 owners manual says Dexron ATF in the hydraulic and 80-90 in the transmission and that would have been into 1967. Anything that had 821 from the Factory was after 1967.

I remember back in the 1990s when I serviced tractors at the dealership, some 190's still using ATF Dextron in the hydraulics, also D series for that matter.
Just something I sorta forgot about over the years.
