 Topic: HD5B wiring schematic

Any one have a schematic to share? Serial #28838, all the books I have are for the units with the kick rod starter and I have the push button starter. Someone has "rewired" this unit and has wires going everywhere. Need to replace gauges as well being that the oil gauge is the only one working and it's not the right gauge.

All the gauges should be manual, not electric except the Ammeter. Should strictly be battery cables with the Hot on a disconnect, to the starter, Generator(If still has one) with a regulator(3Wire) and no other switch save for the push button to start.
Two wires Generator to regulator, a battery wire from that thru the ammeter to hot lug on starter and a pair of wires to/from the push button from the hot lug back to the solenoid terminal. Positive Ground. Changed to Alternator could be 12v or 24v depending on how much got changed including starter. No other relays, no other connections unless had head lights.

I guess I will start ripping wires out and try to fine the right gauges. Which leads to my next question, where to get the correct gauge?

The oddballs will be fuel pressure and trans pressures if you have those. If just looking for Oil pressure, engine temp and amps then any decent auto parts house can get correct bezel size gauges, Stewart and Warner are pretty high priced but will last longer than the machine. Are other good manufacturers.

I picked up a IH water temp gauge - color code close to 2-71 needs .
the fuel pressure gauge needs a Snubber in line to prevent pulses from making gauge needle bounce around .
0 to 60 or so oil pressure gauge (manual)
Amp gauge just needs to be hooked into charging system in right polarity and the output to match your charging system output -
I used a key switch on my HD5 then single battery, also have a light switch - use a electric hour meter - hooked through a oil pressure switch - also a oil pressure switch for light on low pressure warning -
As it has a M42 style starter you need a heavy wire from battery to starter solonoid , heavy ground wire from starter to frame or back to battery .
wire from solonoid to switch to energise solonoid start, wire from starter battery terminal to amp gauge , to charging system , wire from switch to lights via amp gauge
Might want to put a cut off switch in battery box for safety .
a alternator 10SI Delco with a modified small pulley to fit wide belts used on the 2-71

There's lottsa' gauges in the aftermarket. Stewart/Warner, VDO, Sunpro, to name a few. You can get mechanical or electrical. Todays electrical are nice, and they are a lot more accurate than the old electric gauges were. Sometimes with the mechanical gauges, high vibration effects there accuracy. Sometimes the capillary tubes fracture from high vibration also. And those old Dozers sure vibrate your spinal cord that's fir' sure! LOL! Steve@B&B

summitracing.com carries stewart warner gauges including the heavy duty series. I like them for old AC construction applications.
