how is this coming along ? the local john deere dealer has done it again they will not order me a service tool for a 40 year old tractor. they did this to me about 10 yaers ago on a clutch puller for a jd gator so i bought one from anther dealer and also all my deere parts for about five years . but they will send a service man out to use theres. guess they dont need me to order parts from them either

yeah....lots of dealers think they can trap the public into them doing the work! some fall for it, some don't have a choice, some laugh at them and go elsewhere or trade off the item they are trying to fix! then there are small business's that try the same thing, they usually don't stay in business very long!

If the dealership’s Service shop is a good one they should be busy enough that they don’t have to try to limit the amount of special tools that the public gets their hands on.
I say say sell JohnQ all them special tools they want cuz you do make good money on them.

Check Fleabay and Craigslist as some older service tools come up on them for sale. If you have a p/n just a Google search may turn up a used for sale.

this dealership covers four or five states, our indepenant shop isnt going to even thouch them

I'd just put the name, part number, etc. in Google and see what comes up. It should find anything including in Ebay and Amazon. Always works for me!

I've yet to see a 'special service tool' that someone with reasonable skill and a shop couldn't make themselves. If you have pictures of it, it can be made.Maybe not as pretty but it it works,well, there you go.
as an example... the gator clutch puller. did JD actually make the clutch,themselves ? If not, see who did,then check small engine shops if they have the tool. Lots of times, mechanics 'bodge' this and that to do a repair.
As an example ,last year I made a 'forklift tire/rim/brake drum lift'.I can't afford another hernia, them things is HEAVY! Yes, it took me a day to figure it out, 2 hours to fab and used it for 10 minutes. Yes, it's sitting collecting dust BUT I made a $500 tool for free and it's available anytime I need it, or anyone else.

I too have made a lot of special tools, maybe only use once, but the savings far out weights the cost!

I like to go to auctions and buy flats of tools, just to have them around when the time comes that I need a special wrench. I can go into.that box get a wrench cut it, weld it, bend it, what ever I need to.

I made my own sleeve pullers for Mack, Allis, Cummins. Didn't take very long and they worked fine.

we make most of our stuff also on the mill and lathe but somtimes you just need to purchase it or have one to get some presion measurements in order to fabricate or time to biuld
