 Topic: HD5; hand clutch stuck

Went to fire my 5 up after sitting a couple of months. Seems my kids must have engaged the hand clutch while it sat. Well, now I cannot get it in gear while running. Goes right in while engine off. So, first thing I tried is bumping it forward and backward with my tractor. Unfortunately I cannot get any real movement because I'm on loose gravel with my tractor even in 4wd it will not hook up. I took off the inspection plate, everything has been greased well. Not sure what the the part is called that looks like a brake rotor and pad but it is engaging and disengaging as it should. Will it have to be disassembled? If so, big job or not bad. Dozer is a 55. Thanks for any help!

I had a early hd6 stuck, bumped it into a large tree a couple oftimes and it popped loose. Good luck.

Can you expand on that. How did u bump it against a tree? Would it be worth pulling out of where it's parked in neutral and then try pushing it in first gear...? Not sure how a tree would help..?

Pull both steering clutches back for nuetral and then let them engaged and then doing it all over again...

Are we talking about the same thing..? Hand clutch that you push forward to select gear. Then pull back to engage clutch to move tractor. Steering clutches work great. I realize most often it's the steering clutches that lock but not this time...

Put tractor in forward/reverse what ever you need to get it out of where you are. Pull both steering clutches back, start engine and tractor will not move. With the hand clutch disengaged move the dozer by releasing the steering clutches. Sometimes they will Break free right away sometimes you need to push against something like a rock or tree. Once against immovable object work the steering clutches in and out to jar the hand clutch free. If it is still stuck you can try getting into the clutch through the inspection hole and pry it a little all the way around to free it up. Rust is sticking the clutch to either the flywheel or pressure plate.

Will starting in gear put too much stress on the starter/flywheel?
Thinking if possible I could pull start it then work steering clutches. I don't have much room though.
Manual says I can pour solvent thru the access plate. Are they referring to Kerosene? I thought either that or Vinegar to dissolve rust first. Ley it sit a couple hours then try to bump it again...? Not sure if vinegar would harm anything else...?

I would start it and let it warm up a little so it starts easy. Then shut it down, put in gear and start with steering clutches pulled back. It is more strain on the starter but should be ok as you are just turning gears and the steering clutches without driving the tractor. I have started in gear with clutch engages and the gear reduction is great enough to allow that. Try to break free before adding liquids.

that small plate is the clutch brake - it stops the rotation of the mainshaft to allow change of gears without clash . Use the steering clutches to move machine - to get out to where the master clutch can be freed by applying a load - no problem starting in gear and using the steering clutches . In fact I have used starter motor to move the full machine in the shop when working on it. couple times also on jobsite when had to move machine a few inches or feet .

Got it freed up. Started it up, moved it around and it let go. Whew! I was thinking I'd have to pull clutch apart! Thx for everyone's help!

When you have one stuck like that NEVER let the levers snap back It will clean the teeth off the steering clutches.
