Is there a way to change a standard 1000 rpm shaft in on to just a 540?

If you have a single speed 1000 RPM PTO shaft on a One-Ninety, yes it can be retrofitted down to a single speed 540 PTO shaft. There wasn't too many made like that, and there are plenty of 540 RPM PTO parts in salvage yards. Now, which type do you have?? The manual shifted type requiring the foot clutch to engage it, or the optional hydraulic clutch type ??

Then, you'd need to buy a complete hydraulic PTO clutch box AND the driving gear up inside the torque housing. Also, the 540 shaft sticking out the rear of the tractor. You'll need a serious slide hammer puller with a 1/4" NC bolt to pull the two alignment dowels from the PTO box.

Does the tractor have a 2spd pto?
Do you have a flange with three bolts around the pto shaft? thats single spd. If you have a flange and 4 bolts then it's the 2 spd. ![]() |

Well, if your current situation is truly a single speed 1,000 RPM PTO shaft, you could remove the lift arm housing complete and swap it with the newer dual-speed 540/1000 RPM style housing and you're in business. The dual-speed housing was used on many late model 185 and 200 tractors and will bolt right on a One-Ninety.

Nope. All you'd need is the complete rear(dual-speed) lift arm housing and it's inside drive shaft. The dual speed PTO system is 1000 RPM from the front and then reduces down to 540 RPM in the lift arm housing.
