I have a lot of noise coming from the torque tube when the PTO is engaged or the power director is in neutral or low . High side power director is perfectly quiet unless PTO is engaged . Where should I start looking , and for what ? I'm new to this sort of thing , so my apologies if I've posted in the wrong place .

Rare, but it sounds like a bearing or gear problem just ahead of the Power Director clutch. If so, it will require a split of the rear end away from the center section and some special tooling to make repairs. You can start by draining the hydraulic oil in two very clean buckets to inspect for sparkly material. Dropping down the sump you might find even more bad stuff laying on the screen.

I'm sure you can find bearings. As for the gears??  I doubt they are all available new, but the salvage yard can be your best friend on that.  This could be a BIG job and not for the faint of heart.

I'm always up for a challenge . I've split some Oliver's bigger than this 190 , just never run across one with a problem like this . Thought it kind of odd that it was quiet on the high side unless the PTO is engaged , but noisy on the low and neutral all the time .

I recently had to have the PTO gear changed on my latest 180 gas tractor. Whenever you engaged the PTO, it would have a real growl and a lot of noise in the torque tube. Took it apart and had to replace the PTO gear with a real good used one, all new gaskets and, while I was in there, I installed a clutch unit and turned the flywheel as well. The problem was the gear had three teeth off it. The guy I bought the tractor from told me he always had a problem with getting it engaged, that all it wanted to do was growl and make noise! I think he was just trying to force it in and knocked off the teeth in the process. There's a lot of labor involved, that's for sure. I also put new oil back in it, while I was doing the job...not the old. Cost for everything was about 2800.00, but I did have a new fuel pump installed and carb. work done, along with cleaning the fuel tank.   Rick

If it is the splines on the clutch shaft drive gear and you want to change out the clutch shaft, I do it thru the belt pulley hole and do not split the tractor twice. You have to be a little creative and have a second pair of hands when assembling, but it saves a lot of work by only splitting the tractor once under the platform area.

My PTO engages smoothly , tractor doesn't jump out of any gears , power director works perfectly . Shows just under 3000 hours on the clock . The brake and clutch pedals show very little wear . The drawbar isn't elongated like it has pulled any heavy loads on a regular basis . The tractor was a one owner from central Illinois before I purchased it . She now resides around Springfield , MO . The hardest work she'll be doing now is pulling a brush hog .

It will be interesting to see what has gone wrong. I've never had a gasser ever fail anything in that area of the driveline. The turbo diesel has far and away more torque and hammering going on to potentially break things.

My 180 is a gas tractor, but...like I said, I think the guy I bought it from was just pushing the PTO lever and cramming into gear and not using the clutch to do it. That's what broke the teeth off the gear! He said he didn't have it long and didn't really know much about it and I believe him now! LOL! It can't be good at all, with what's going on inside the 190 gasser though! If it isn't something serious now, it soon will be... Rick

Would it hurt anything to use the tractor for just pulling some hedge trees , if I keep the power director on the high side ? Have 2 or 3 more weeks worth of work for the old girl before I put her on the operating table ! Lol

If you must, you must. It sure isn't going to help it any. Time will tell.

The noise in the 180 gasser we run was failed bearing(S) on a in/out shaft (would have to look back on the receipt) and involved a "salvage" shaft but new bearings. If it "SOUNDS" ugly now, it can only get worse!!

I think I'll just go ahead and pull her in the shop and park it then . It's too good of a tractor to risk tearing up . Everything else on it works fine.....just the noise from the PTO and low side power director . I already have the paint and a full set of decals for it , but want to make sure everything is right before I lay the orange on her .

That's what was wrong with mine, too, FREEDGUY! It can't heal itself...that's for sure! Better fixing it now, than letting it tear itself up and do major damage!   Rick

Does anyone know if a 190XT Series 1 and a Series 3 torque tube will interchange ?

Dr Allis, I am a little confused by your statement that you change out the clutch shaft by only splitting under the platform, if I remember right  the clutchshaft has to come out the front of the torque tube.

It will come out from the rear if you are creative enough. A single split isn't bad. A double split on a tractor that big can be dangerous, if you don't have proper tooling.
