 Topic: 6 to 12 volt conversion

I have a 54 Model G. It was my granddaddy's and a few yrs ago he updated it to a 12 volt alternator. He used it all the time, but it would die and he would have to charge it in the barn before using it again. I am under the assumption that he wired it wrong. It is currently set up as negative ground, where doing research I think that it is likely positive ground. Am I correct, I would like some confirmation before switching and having it blow up in my face. Thanks for any help.

Alternators are commonly NEGATIVE ground...However there are rare exceptions.

There is no need to switch it back to pos ground and if alternator is neg ground you can't change it. If you want to change it for a restoration purpose, you will need a generator anyway. After charging the battery, put a volt meter on it . Remember what you get, should be 12v, then start the tractor up and see if you have 13 or more volts. If not the alternator isn't working for whatever reason.

I have a WD, also positive ground, and a friend did the conversion to 12V for me. He included a convertor to address the reversed polarity and it works great. The one catch is, as he predicted, I fried the 6V starter in exactly 1 year. My friend runs an auto repair shop and I would suspect any good mechanic can do what my friend did for the polarity.

Don, how did you fry your starter? I converted my CA about 14 years ago and have never touched the starter. I've always remembered that I have a 6V starter and not grind away on it if the engine doesn't want to start.

There is nothing to address about changing the polarity. Switch the leads around and replace the coil if it has a distributor, and switch the leads on the Amp meter. There is nothing to "convert". My CA and WD45 have been 12v Neg ground for close to 15 years each and never had any trouble with the starter or anything else for that matter.
