Got a 7060 with t handle shifter that pops out of gear in reverse. When I’m shifting it if I take it in and out of reverse a few times you can tell when it catches and then it is fine. It’s almost as if the detent balls are not falling in to the groove on the shift rail. Is there an easy way to fix this and make it work 100% of the time right off the bat. I’ve tried adjusting the cable linkages and it doesn’t seem to make a difference. Once it’s in good (you can feel it if you try to pull it out) it works great.

Following this! My 7045 does this too, sounds identical. Sure can make a guy mad. Especially if you’re almost stuck and trying to work your way out.

My 7060 and 7020 act like that also. It feels squishy going into gear. Feels like cable ends are not secured good enough or worn out cable. Plan to get them in the shop soon to try to figure it out. I know it shifts better if I take my time rotating t handle and getting into center of that detent before trying to get into any gear.

I remember going under the cab floor of my 7045. Swing open the battery box and you'll find the linkage connecting the shifter to the transmission. Due to age and wear the all that linkage gets a little sloppy. I shortened a threaded rod that ties it all together and adjust so shifter is centered in console when in nuetral

The cable for the 5-speed tranny is the side shift cable and is not the issue. Your problem is mechanical linkage behind and above the batteries. Sometimes a bolt loosens or breaks at the rearmost part of the linkage where it attaches to the bottom of the cab floor. Cab mounts are settling after 40 years. Adjust linkage so the lever is in the center of its stroke when in neutral. You must be able to detent into 2nd gear and Reverse to be properly centered/adjusted. Jumping out of reverse is a BAD thing and can damage gear teeth.

Those tractors have a habit of breaking them ear off of the linkage, usually right on the top of the gear shift cover. It let's things get sloppy and then pops out of reverse.

Just completely rebuilt my 7010 this summer. I put new eyelets that bolt to the floor boards. New eyelets I used have the poly inserts, new cables ect. Works smooth as a sewing machine now. Believe it or not those metal eyelets froze on the shaft and in the eyelet ball socket. I could even move the shifter at all before I tore into it. Had to drill a 2” hole in the floor panels to get access to the one eyelet bolt. Two eyelets attach to the floor with 1/2” bolts
