Did you look into a remanufactured clutch from Hy Capacity?
I have heard of people rewelding the gears if they are worn from grinding and jump out of gear but it takes a good welder to do it properly. Not sure if that is an option for you?
As far as the repair costs, thats up to you. I can tell you that if you were to buy a new tractor that can do what a D15 can do it will cost you well over $30k. Years ago everyone were junking other tractors because of high cost repairs but fixing the green ones "because a JD was worth the repair". Just goes to show that JD are brilliant marketers.
One thing that does worry me a bit is that tractor is being held up by the frame rails. I would prefer to hook it into the valve cover bolts. I dont think that front plate is built well enough to hold the engine up. I could be wrong but not the way I was taught to split a D series.

3rd gear went out on my D-15 several years ago and it took me two years to find a mechanic willing to jump on the problem. Man, was this an expensive proposition! Using all AGCO parts, the mechanic said, "You have more in the repair than the tractor is worth". A new heavy duty clutch was a whopping $800 not including the mechanic fee. The old China made clutch that I put in several years ago lasted only about 200 hours and that is with me not riding the clutch.
