going to put new tires on the wd next spring wondering how 16.9 x 28 tires would look or work on a wd that is a working tractor ? any pic.s ? thanks Hud

I have them on my WD45. There look pretty good to me, but just a little big. Snap coupler eye just barely makes it into the bell since the tractor sits higher. An actual WD had shorter fender brackets than a WD45 so I think 16.9's would hit the fender on a WD.

I have them on my WD and WD 45, But I leave the rear wheels out to the first hole on the tracks, Rake hay and do odd jobs with both tractors, I like the way they look on both tractors.

got a set on a wd' use for some plowing an tractor rides' got them move all the way in close to finders but never has hit' works fine' has good ground speed also.

You would definitely want wider rims for the wider tires. Putting wide tires on the original rims pulls in the sidewalls so that only the center of the tire touches the ground. 14.9 Is the widest you can put on the stock rim.

yes i will need wider rims i have 12" now but tires have to wait until spring so i was hoping some one would have pictures before i decide between 16. 9 or 14.9 , i also have 45 fenders and bracket from my wd45 with the loader that were removed when the tractor was new to make room for the f11, and put away they do not even have scrathes in the paint . my 45 has 14.9 s and i like them . currantly the wd has 13.9

In contrast, if you put small tires on a big tractor, that big tractor is not so 'big' anymore. That's because:
Big tires make a little tractor float over soft ground...
Larger diameter tires generate more tractive effort because the chord of contact is greater, and the angle of incidence at slip is shallower.
Big tires full of fluid generate more tractive effort by virtue of higher weight ratio on driven wheels...
Big tires half full of fluid effectively lowers center of gravity of small tractor, making more stable hillside operation...
Combine tires are frequently very 'available' in good-enough condition... and typically wider than regular tractor tires. My D17 needed new shoes, and my budget wasn't strong enough to swallow a pair of OEM size... but $400 got me a pair of excellent used combine tires in 16.9x26s on excellent rims. Of course, the pilot hole and bolt pattern was totally wrong, but a few minutes with cutting torch and grinder took that center out, and my laser-buddy excised new centers from a sheet of 1/2" steel plate, which I hot-glued to those wheels, and they're great!  |

In the 22+ years I was in the farm tire business I never put a pair of 16.9's on a WD or WD 45. I have put a lot of hours on a 45 with 14.9's on it. They fit in the 16" plow furrow, easily go down the corn row while cultivating corn. I had a 226 JD picker on my wd45 for several years and it would not have worked with 16.9's on it. They are the right height if you are going to use the snap coupler machinery supplied for a wd45. Good luck with your decision.

Here's a couple pictures of mine 16.9's are on 15" rims. I wish the duals had 8" spacer bands instead of 10", but that's what I found for a good price. The big front tires were put on by my Great uncle in the 80's. He put duals on it and would disk the wet ground once to open it up to dry,

14.9 x 28 Firestone tires and rims I got off a parts WD45 tractor hits the fenders on my WD when spun all the way in. I had 16.9 on it before I restored the tractor. Actually Dad bought the tractor back in the late 1960's with 16.9 on it but he never used the tractor for row cropping. Just a loader and it pulled the spring tooth 5 section drag, maybe ran an elevator when I was old enough to drive it.

That's a good picture of Daves 45 with the 16.9's. Looks great with the duals too. Here is grandson Nic's WD with 14.9-28's on 14 inch rims as a comparison. It has the original WD fenders and brackets.

The real advantage to putting larger tires on a smaller tractor is: not nearly as much weight is need for the traction required for the horsepower. So no need to add salt water to rust out the rims.

I put 14.9 Good Year’s w/stock12” rims last year.The tires are not as wide as the original tires that were on there. The firestone F/R are wider. It makes me sick when I look at those little tires and the bucks I spent. My vote is to go with 16.9’s and 13” rims!

An uncle of mine ran 18.4 x 26 combine tires and rims on his D17. No fluid and that thing could walk across water. It was kind of amazing.

There's a balance to that. Mine definitely still needs weight to pull well. If you get too big of tires with not enough weight you can tent to just sit on top and spin because there's not enough weight to bite.
