Im crestfallen!
Reason I need it is I need to take the existing gear off the auger so I can rebuild the auger boot. Cant get it off!! A gear puller I use wont work; the claws cant bite on to the backside of the gear. My fab man couldnt get it off either (and if he cant, I know its not "just me"). So we have little choice but to grind/burn it off..

Tom, Don't know if it will help. I had a WD45 Hi Crop I needed to get a tie rod end loose. Tried everything else, then got out the fire wrench. Did not work either. Tried a couple more ideas but all for nothing. Ran out of day and quit. The next day went out expecting to have to cut it off and it was loose. Came right off. Don't know why, but it made my day the next day anyway.

I have two parts AC 60's in upstate NY if you send me a pic I can see if I have what you need (not that I'll have much luck getting one off either)

You might try cutting off the stub shaft on the auger so that you can get the gear and shaft in a press. Just a thought. - AL

You should have played the lottery that day. We did give it two seperate attempts. My fab man tried one day, then I tried it with him another day...

thanks for the offer Jonathan. I got someone looking for one thats already off. Lets see if that pans out. Would hate to put you thru it! ... This gear has a beveled backside and the puller claws just slide off that backside when you get enough tension applied.

Tom: Use a bearing separator to get a purchase on the shank of the gear, then use the gear puller on that. Heat it up red hot and then quench it in a bucket of water. Put on the separator and pull the separator with the puller to get it off. Two pieces of scrap steel of sufficient strength with allthread through them will work as a substitute. You can also use wax from a toilet bowl ring to melt around the shaft. Keep the heat at the opposite side of the gear from the wax and it will wick it into the crack. http://www.harborfreight.com/large-bearing-separator-3979.html

Tom I have heat parts red hot and then pour ice water on it and put the puller on it and will come I think the soulden change in the temp. breaks up the rust. John

Well guess what?
Went back to the offending bearing and got it off. I noticed the opposite side of the gear puller claw arms had a different stlye "tooth" on the end. Figured I would try it. Voila, it was able to hold on to the gear. But that gear was a sumb*tch to get off; it was stuck on there good!
