I'm glad you got it running again.  I had to do basically the same thing with my pump.  Mine was still running but the metering valve was sticky and lagging behind throttle/governor inputs. 

Now with fresh diesel, a clean tank/lines, using red premium farm diesel, and biobor hopefully I am done with the diesel sludge.

Happy to report it started and ran great tonight
Took it for a cruise around the farm to check waterways and wet spots
