Had the opportunity to drive a 175 with shuttle shift this weekend- didn't know this transmission was on an AC. Seemed really handy- Question, why weren't they more common? Price ? reliability? TIA

I have never heard of a 175 having shuttle shift. Power director hi and low range in each gear. Do you have a picture of this tractor?

I know of a few that are around. Never driven one. My assumption would be that most farmers at the time would have preferred having 8 forward speeds and 2 reverse as opposed to 4 forward and reverse.

They were around at the time, and it was SOMETHING NEW and the Farmers at the time were probably sure they wouldn't hold up; now the shuttle shift is the common thing, once again Allis had a good thing, just didn't capitize on it

Loader work was the main market. Problem was though that the PTO was no longer 540 when you have a shuttle transmission. That I am sure limited the sales greatly.

Having a 170G, with shuttle, it will go faster in reverse than forward, all gears, no hi or lo range and has 1000 rpm only due to gearing.

We have a 175 and a 170 both shuttles. The 175 was a loader tractor and the 170 was used as a raking tractor from the people that had them before us. They are very handy and were ahead of their time. I have seen probably 10 of them over the years and the other day on craigslist i seen someone had a diesel 175 shuttle. Up til that time i had only ever seen gas tractors being shuttles and figured they did not make them in diesel but this was a factory shuttle diesel so they were built.

They had them prior to the 100 series. I have seen a D15 industrial with shuttle shift as well. I was amazed. Was Allis Chalmers the first to come out with shuttle shift?

The I-60 and I-600 industrials had them, I assume they are the same as in the farm tractors. They would have been more useful if they were able to keep the 8 speeds to go with. I see a 170D with shuttle on auction in CA this month...

I had a few of them for the D-14 's,you change gearing in the torque tube housing ,your shafts to hand clutch now has one clock wise rotation and a counter clock wise rotation going in to hand clutch ,u lock out reverse gear on shifter cover .now u have 4 forward and 4 reverse . I have one now to put in my D-14 ,I only use it for ,snow ,fire wood ,and loader tractor around shop .

I have the shifter handle for the left side ,use them with loader so u can work hyd. while shifting ,

I've a D15II that has the shuttle shift and is on the right side with the hyd control for the loader on the left side and the pto is 540rpm I love that tractor and is great for loader work. Kenny L.

The 1959 D14 Industrial Loader/Backhoe I rebuilt has the shuttle shift on the left side. I LOVE it's functionality,,,!!!

My I 600 has a shuttle and once had a cotton picker running gear based on a
D17 that had a shuttle.

Some neighbor/friend/farmer somewhere in my childhood had one....but I don't remember what!
Almost thought by visual memory it would have been a D series shuttle, but maybe not.
