WD Allis Chalmers running rough: Compression on cylinders 1 through 4 is 100, 100, 70, and 100 psi respectively. Plugs cleaned (before and after compression check and they were very sooty both times telling me that it is running extremely rich), plug gap set at .30, points gap set at .20. (Fuel system cleaned and fuel flowing well with new gasoline). By switching carburetor and making adjustments to it and by switching coil it didn't make any difference. Adjusted timing to no avail.
Governor working properly. Tractor just seems to spit and sputter but stays running. Anyone else had similar issue? I took audio/video of it running but I am unable to attach it. I can email or text the video if need be. |

As mentioned above, unhook the air hose coming from the air cleaner - could be plugged. Based on what you have indicated, adjusting the carb should help smooth things out. The 3rd cylinder having 70 lbs compression is not a good sign. There should not be any more than a 10 percent variance in compression numbers. Could be a knock in the engine?

No knocking what so ever. Just the cutting out syndrome (spit/sputter) while running.

I tried adjusting each carb (when assembled to engine) while tractor was running and spitting/sputtering. Didn't make a difference.

I have a WD that is acting just like this one. Haven't figured it out yet. Took it to a local mechanic who replaced a whole lot of little parts like plugs, points, etc. and timed it. Still runs rough.

What does the cap and rotor look like? Look real close at the cap to see if there's any little streaks. The streaks would be carbon tracks and cause the spark to jump to where its not supposed to be.

Maybe you should double check the plug wires, to be sure the firing order is right.
I have 'fixed' a couple tractors that wanted to sputter and spit, after somebody did a 'tune up' on them. |

It may not always work but my WD45 was acting like that and I had replaced plugs, points, condenser, wires, etc. along with the carb tuneup and setting and nothing was working well. I finally replaced the regular plugs with NKG plugs and the problem not only went away but the tractor is firing better than I have had it work for several years. The plug number escapes me as I type but it is the standard NKG replacement for the 295 plug that AC uses. I wish I had done that sooner as I had replaced plugs several times previously but however....... Sometime the expenditure of just a little bit more money in the right place pays off. No guarantees but it sure worked for me!! regards, Ken McGregor

Today I swapped out the distributor, points and condenser from another running WD I have. Started tractor up and it runs fine. When I get some "free" free time I will play around swapping rhe old points, old condenser and old distributor each separately and determine which of those three units was the culprit for making the WD spit, sputter and run rough. Thank you all for your suggestions and help in trying to resolve this matter. You are all a wealth of information and help.

Chuck the Distributor you pulled out in a vise. Pop the cap off, grab the rotor and the bottom drive gear and see if it wobbles. If it does, there's your culprit. Brian nailed it if that's the case. I offer Distributor rebuilding or exchange if that's the problem if interested. Hope you find the culprit.....

+1 for Brian and Steve... the distributor shaft bushing is a common wear point. Send yours to Steve to refurb.
