I saw an old line shaft driven drillpress for sale. It came out of the old Daisie BB gun factory near here which makes me want it even more. It’s been for sale over a week and still there but the owner has yet to message me.

Well,,Thad,,at least you got that sort of interesting stuff listed around your neck of the woods,,,,I never see that equipment listed around here,,,, There is an "auction" place bout 2 miles up the road from me where they hold auction bout every 3 months or so and I go hopin to find something I ain't got one of,,,,,,The problem is when something interesting does show up these friggin numbskulls around here think it is more valuable than gold,,,,shheeeesh,,, Bout 3-4 years ago, one of the farmers had an old Craftsman 109 lathe that needed lots of work,,with NO tooling that was catchin lots of attention and you would of thought thet little sob would sell for $200-300,,,,chit,,it went to a new home to the tune of $550,,!!! I told the buyer I would of sold him my 109 for that price,,,sheeesh.

I have one of those out in my "shop". A guy showed up at my old work places one day, wanting to get rid of it, but didn't want it scrapped. It went from his truck to mine and had to use the engine hoist(cherry picker thing) to get it off the truck and set against the wall. It had a big pulley added and someone had ran it from and electric motor at some time. I have never had power to it, but it works GREAT for cracking walnuts after I made a quick die for the bottom and added a smaller MT sleeve in the quill.

OH,,and,,I had forgot,,,there is an old junk iron dealer that has one of those BIG floor model drills that needs a motor and has lots of the bigger size bits that are morse taper. Don't know the brand but the motor mounts on the inside at the bottom of the housing,,,? The old style rivetted belt is still there but would prolly blow up is used again,,,,the whole thing is bout 6 feet high and prolly weighs 3-4 hunndred pounds,,,!!!! I ask him every time I see him if he ready to sell but just shakes his head,,,,he's 85 years old,,,,and kinda stubborn,,,,,,

I grew up with one of those mounted on a block wall. Flat pulley for the upper shaft drive if preferred, hand wheel for depth, or indexing pawl so you could be doing something else,,,like oiling the drill, hand crank on opposite end of shaft, installed optional electric motor above driven via v-belt seems like it always had a bit, large enough to do the job. I think my brother still has it.

Have 3 drillpresses now it seems - small floor press that takes up to 5/8 drill it says - seems the quill bearings lasted about a year or so and had to replace quill .
Bought a larger unit rated up to 1" and multi step drives and lot better precision as well as other features .
Now it seems i use the Bridgeport Mill more than either drillpress - bought that from company I was working for when it closed -$450 with all the collets , tooling , vices , degree table , and end mills .
Also bought a South Bend 9" lathe for $250 and was going to buy the 12" x 48" Clausing Lathe and tooling but figured my Nishimori 16" gap bed lathe was all I needed at present . (Clausing sold for $500) I Did get all the tooling for the Clausing though to use, Aloris tool holder , carbide tools, boring head and other Aloris holders .

Joe if you remember it took several years to find my lathe. The old Atlas drillpress I just got came from the scrap yard. I traded other scrap for it. I put a 1 hp motor on it and it works well cept too fast. I’ll keep looking for a factory center pulley for it or sell it if I can snag this big old relic. I know Daisy came here in 1958 so I wonder where this old beast was before that? The pics show a motor mounted on the base and a long leather belt as you described.

We had a hand crank on the farm that we moved to in 1960. It was good for pinching curious boys fingers. Worked good for that.

Retired from maintance and wanted a lathe to play with . Negibhor found an old Mornarch.Must be pre ww 1.No ser no. .Bout 14 in swing and 50 in between centers.Got 3 and 4 jaw chucks and a bucket of tooling , 2 hp single phase motor.Must weigh 2 to3 thousand lb. Good to kill time with . 300 hundred bucks .Not precise but fun.

I have one of them old hand crank style drill presses that is still brand new. Never been mounted on the wall and has never drilled a hole. I bought it 30 years ago when an old hardware store in my hometown went out of business. 90 year old lady who owned and ran it died. Was probably sitting in her store for 50 years prior to that. I’m hopefully going to look at it tomorrow. He says it’s over 500 lbs. he doesn’t think we can get it in my truck so maybe my trailer. He says it’s very muddy at the moment.

I spent a lot of time looking at camelback drill presses and found a lot of similar presses but the one I’m lookin at has a big round base and a big square table with an oil trough. Most I saw had a square base and round table. This one doesn’t appear to have power down feed.

Bought it and it’s sitting in the shop beside the Atlas I just finished.
Mechanics machine Co. Rockford Illinois. The seller is going to give me a production counter that was on it at the Daisy BB gun plant.
It’s all free and nothing seems broken. The canvas belt is very loose. That may be quite an expense.

If I remember right,,that dude that has the one I'm talkin bout told me you could grind out the rivets, take out the excess and re-rivet the leather pieces,,,he also told me those belts can run with lots of slack without worry,,,. Ya gonna post some pics,,??

I’ve been letting everything soak in deep creep and tonight I oiled everything and wired the ole beast up. The motor starts slow but this thing is the smoothest running drillpress I’ve ever ran. Slow speed is sloooow. The motor is a big old beast wired for 120. It seems slow and weak. The switch is in a big metal box and works like a breaker. It runs about a minute and trips. I see no tag but I saaume this needs to be on 240. I have a 240 v motor off my old air compressor I may put on it.

Thad, I don't know how ORIGINAL you want this to be........ I have a 1940s 6 inch lathe. It had a 1-1/4 inch wide leather belt on when I got it.. all tore up... I bought a flat fan belt for a car engine ( with the 7-8 small grooves) that was 1-1/4 wide and the right length and installed that instead... been on there 30 years and never needs adjustment !!

Steve I have no problem doing that but this belt is probably 10’ long. I have a fan belt off of a 580 case backhoe running my lathe and it doesn’t slip.
