I e-mailed the guy to let him know what it really is but I don't think he cares. He's been trying to sell parts off that patrol for a year. If he sold all the parts for his asking price he'll end up getting about $10,000 for that thing.

not all WC's had the release coupling, the early ones did not which made it real difficult at times, thats why they came up with it.

I've seen them on about every Speed Patrol and the theory there is it was for disengageing the rearend to tow it to another job. Been told on regular WC tractors you could disengage the drive at the end of the field and still use your cultivator lift.

Also used with the Rotobaler to stop forward motion while still driving the baler with the PTO

Also used to allow mechanical lift to complete its cycle.
Useful when you're up against a fence with the mounted cultivator still in the ground.

it would only allow the tractor to be "kicked out of gear" while the PTO could continue to run (which might be useful), but you'd have to use the clutch to re-engage the ground travel.

The WC had a mechanical lift for mounted equipment, like cultivator, side mount mower. It worked much like the lift on trailer plows before hydraulics, the transmission had to be in gear and tractor moving for it to work. This disconnect disconnected the drive shaft between the transmission and differential, thus allowing transmission to be turning and tractor to not be moving.
