Topic: Engine Casting Number for 1941 WFPosted: 03 Jan 2017 at 6:13pm |

I have a 1941 WF that needs an engine and block replacement. Someone thought that antifreeze was too costly and you know the result. I would like to keep the tractor so the engine casting number is consistent with the tractor serial number. The last two digits on the engine casting number are -28. I understand there is an earlier block with a casting number with the last two digits of -26. The casting number is behind the magneto. Does anyone know what the correct block (-26 or -28) is for this year of WF? Likely, the WC would be the same. Thanks.

I would guess that if your block has a serial number on it behind the carb hose and that engine s/n seems correct for 1941 era, your -28 casting number is correct for that time in history.

Dr. Allis your comment is right. Trouble is that the engine serial number was ground off when the freeze break was repaired with a large patch over the break. I'm hoping that someone has a 1941 WC that they know has the original engine. The casting number on that engine should provide my answer. Thanks.

I understand what you're trying to do, but if can't even read the casting number now for the correct police, does it really matter if you have the exact correct block later? I wouldn't worry about it

Allis Dave,
I can read the casting number which ends in XXXXXX-28. I want to know if this engine casting number is consistent with a 1941 WC or WF. My concern is if this tractor had a later block put in it at sometime. Just trying to keep the correct police happy.

Farrell. Checked my wc. Serial # 95383 which is early to mid 1940. Block serial is w99854g and casting is clearly 03019-23.
Dont know if that helps any or not |

Cal, Thanks very much that is what I wanted to know. My gosh, looks like Allis had another casting number lower than the -26. Devoid of other options, guess I will go with the -26 casting number unless other information comes into focus. Thanks to all of you that posted on this question. It was all very helpful.

Bryan Smiths website has casting #'s for B/C/CA engines but I don't think anybody has a record on WC/WD blocks.

Matt, you found another number. I had no clue that there were so many different casting numbers for these blocks. Here's guessing that Allis must have changed the casting number each time the blocks were modified (purely a guess). So, the intrigue deepens.

Casting numbers could vary from year to year . It is also possible 2 or more casting numbers were used in one years production. Here is a list of engine serial numbers for different tractor numbers by year. This is for the WC, but engine serial numbers would be in the same range for the WF by year of production.
Approximate engine sn based on tractor sn:

Thank you. This is great information so the block matches up with the tractor serial number. Where did you find this information?

Well back in March of 1938 the dash number was still -15, this is the block for my 38 WF.

The engine s/n's do NOT line up exactly with the chassis s/n's. There were always more engines produced than tractors, for water pumps, power units, etc.

Tom, does your engine number in the 38 fit in with the list above? Somewhere between 74894 - 75927

The chart has two rows for 1938 - separated when the WC changed to the styled sheet metal. 1938 blocks inclusive would be 62834 - 75927. Since my WF block was cast in March it fits nicely in the first range. My block is W69256HA, which is the first engine number I have seen with an HA suffix.

OK, I missed that double listing. Maybe a casting change between them???????????? So it does fit by the top set of numbers.

I have been taking note of casting numbers on WC, WF, and WD engine blocks for a while, Not that it is a definitive study since the data is fairly limited, there is a pattern emerging though. I thought I'd share it for what it's worth.
http://allis01.com/fossto/AC-WC-Engine-Data.html Thanks for the information on the HA suffix, I hadn't heard that before. Edited by TomMN - 08 Jan 2017 at 8:29am |

My 1936 WC is WC27303 3019-8 W27795G and my 1949 W Patrol is 3019-31 W200245G so they both fit into your pattern nicely.

Thanks to all of you. Your responses have been very informative. As best I can tell, my early 1941 WF probably had a -23 or a -25 block. Given information in Tucker's list and the information in Tom's, it looks like it is probably one of these two but can't be nailed down any closer. Am I thinking right on this one? Maybe someone will post who has a 1941 WC or WF with the original engine.
