I have been using 15 x 40 Shell Rotella for many years .
A good multi-grade heavy service oil, Might add some STP or other zinc bearing additive also as most new formula oils are missing that element from them. New Diesel oils are formulated not to meet EPA rules for Tier 3 and Tier 4 engines or engines with cat converters and much is missing .

If you have any issue with oil consumption you can use SAE 40. Most of my trucking career I used the 40W for my Detroit 2-cycle engines with good results (bought it at Walmart most of the time). If you have cold winters and you're still dozing you should go thinner. I used the 40W down to 20 deg. F., of course I had the block heater plugged in and sometimes the oil pan heater. I watched an oil testing demo (for metal to metal protection) once. The 40W gave the over all best results.

Guess since oil pressure was nuttin to be proud of on them 2 strokers, I had heard that you was supposed to run 30 weight in the winter, and 50 weight in the summer. Darrel

I've been told by Detroit specialists that if your engine (Detroit 2-cycle) does not maintain 30 PSI oil pressure at full RPM and hot, the bottom end is at risk. They don't seem too concerned about the oil pressure at idle if at least you have 5 lbs. due to the volume from these pumps.
