I'm trying to rescue a D10 from a farm that is otherwise all red. The current owner isn't interested in anything that isn't red and since I'm not allergic to orange he asked if I would be interested. I am interested, but found the torque tube serial number to be D 10 4383 and the engine number to be 12-2423-R. Does that mean the engine has been replaced? Would that have any ramifications that would make this something to stay away from?

I think the 12 indicates it is a 149 engine. D 10 engines numbers were 138. Early D 10 tractors were 138. I think all D 12 tractors were 149 - could be wrong about that. Later D 10s were 149. Thats my story and I am sticking to it - unless someone says I am wrong.

Early D-10 and D-12's had the 138 engine and the engine number was 10-xxx.
At serial 3000 for D-12's and Serial 3500 for D-10's both tractors got the 149 engine and the engine numbers were 12-xxx. D-10 and 12's are the same with the only real difference being the width.

Larry, Norms book says when the D10 and D12 were introduced in 59 they both had the 138 engine. Beginning in 1961 with D10-3501 and D12-3001 they both went to the 149.I would guess the guy stamping the engine number didn't know what engine was going in what tractor so they could all be stamped D12-xxxx. Any input on that?

I agree with Calvin, the engine numbers D 10 was 138 & D 12 engine numbers were 149. That is my changed story that I am sticking with - for now.

Thanks, fellows. My curiosity has been satisfied and I'm satisfied that this is a project worth the effort.
