Had the gasket start leaking where the oil filter housing mounts to the block on my late L3 with the 670 motor. I replaced with a new gasket, cleaned everything up and used black permetex/gasket sealant. Put it back together and it leaked in a different spot of the gasket. Ruined it taking it apart so I bought another new gasket and installed it dry. It still leaks. What am I missing? Should I use sealant or not? If so, what type? Thanks in advance.

I should specify, it is leaking oil down the side of the block. It isn't the oil cooler itself but where the housing attaches to the block. Thanks

I assume you cleaned all the old gasket material off the block and oil cooler. If so then maybe the oil cooler or block was not machined perfectly flat or it has a small crack in it. Let us know what you find.

We had that same leak on on of our L3's last summer, a real pain to get to and work on. I did use blue permatex on the gasket and got it sealed up on the first try.

Uncle always said "Fill the back of the shovel and the front will take care of itself".

I had everything as clean as I could each time. I couldn't find any flaws or rough spots to blame, so i used red permetex and let it set 24 hours, ran it all day today and don't think we lost a drop. Thanks for the help!
