 Topic: 160 hydraulic issues

I have a low houred 160 lost hydraulics at some point this summer. Shift boot was bad and was out of shed room because of a cement pour. It sat outside for a week while cement cured in that time we had a few decent rains so ended up with watery hydraulic oil Got it back inside and drained it and cleaned the strainer. Still nothing for hydraulics. Put it on back burner till now. Ideas?

Anytime you drain the transmission/hydraulics you have to bleed it. The best way I have found is to put a open hydraulic hose on the rear remote coupler and cycle the remote. Usually point it into a 5 gallon bucket with a lid on it. Good to go after all the air is bled out. It won’t do anything until you bleed it. I just changed all the fluids on my 160 and had the same issue. Easy to resolve.

Assuming you changed the hydraulic filter up front since it had water in the system? If not replace it along with the o-ring on the base. Keeping the transmission strainer clean is extremely important on these 160’s.

I have saw drain petcocks' on 160 pumps to bleed them. Kinda a common thing on 160s. MACK

Under the seat is a plastic strainer - I have used a hot ice pick and opened up the strainer as it will coat over very easy and block watery oil. We have installed one was check valves in the suction side- I looked and can't furnish the after market pn we used..sorry -

Mack, my pump doesn’t have a petcock, just a plug. Guess you could add oil there if the pump lost its prime. Bleeding the air in the system far away from the pump via the hydraulic coupler worked for me but I’m sure there is more than one way to do it. Always open to new ideas. Only took two quick strokes of the remote lever to get the air out and get the hydraulic’s working again including the 3 point lift.
