Sister was running the late l2 through the corn field in 2nd (front lever forward back lever back) and suddenly stalled out. Hydro made noise like it wanted to move but wouldn't. It will not move with the front lever forward. If the front lever is backward everything acts fine. I checked the transmission oil and found the line was loose and had been leaking. There was only a quart and a half or so of oil left, so I drained it, cleaned the screen (it looked good and no metal shavings) refilled it, and it still acts the same. It seems like the front lever won't shove as far forward as it used it, but still can't figure what's wrong. Any guesses? Is it safe to just keep picking in 3rd? Thanks!

This probably won't help you much, but our L3 sometimes had trouble shifting. You gotta really shove it, or it won't go into gear. It's kinda tricky sometimes, so most of the time I just leave it in 2nd and shift the high/low lever to go between 2nd and 4th.

Because the transmission was 2+ gallons low on oil, there has been a seizure of the high range gear on its shaft. It is now welded to the shaft and you have 1 and 3 gears. If you have level fields, I guess you could try and operate in 3rd gear, but it will strain the hydro much more.

Thanks for the replies. I was afraid of that, Dr. Allis. It will move in 4th gear also, just acts like it is really loaded down. Fields are fairly level but still hate to work it that hard. We've got a few parts machines, so it looks like we need to do some mixing and matching.

I mis-spoke.....you have 3 and 4 gears....high range only. If you ever get it into low range it won't move because you're locked in both high and low range.

Since I have a spare transmission, it's probably easier to swap than to fix, right? Thanks for the help

Bummer. Probably better to swap the tranny out than burn out a hydro. Hope it goes  o.k.. These are the things a guy wishes he had three legs for, two to walk on, one to kick in the ass with. Been there, done that. A guy should have a "do over" button. Trev.

I know its hard to check/change the oil in a tranny, but it should be an annual thing just before harvest begins.
