  Just got my Tach back from Haim at Star speedometer and he again amazes me with his beautiful work. Looks and operates like new. Full 1 year warranty also.

Wow that sure looks nice.What kind of turn around time does he have on his work? I got a couple on my d17s that could use a little attention.

Looks great!
I have a question, and I'm not trying to be a wise guy, any reason to rebuild vs just buying a new one?
I just checked ebay, a new one is under $25.00 delivered. Yes it ships from India. I've used these gauges on all my tractors and they've all worked great.
Just wondering.

Looks like new. Is it just me; but I always thought the tach on the "D" series is almost useless. It's down too low to see and even if you could see it it's the most confusing tach ever put on a tractor.

Once a person gets used to the "D" series tach it is not too bad. I use mine mainly setting the RPM for my 80R mower, 6' rotary mower, Matthews 9E Rotary Scythe and J.I. Case 140W wire tie square baler. Sometimes use it for setting my field sprayer.

Hiam rebuilt my D17 tach last summer and 185 the year before that. They both look and work great.
His turn around time varies with how busy he is. A couple years ago he was a month out. Last fall it only took him a week.
Why did I rebuild instead of buying a new one from India? I can keep the hours without starting again at 0 I think this original will last longer than the reproduction He'll make you a new tach cable as well I'd rather pay a guy in the US trying to make a living than a factory in India. |

I asked a lot of questions a few years ago concerning the aftermarket tachs, especially on this site. Didn’t find a single person that like them. Inaccurate and failed a early death, most under 50 hours. But my main reason was to stay with the factory gauge that came on the tractor if it could be repaired. They are well built, and as you can see Haim put the hours on it when it broke at my request. This is my third Tach that I have sent to him and I have been extremely pleased. He also warranties his work for one year. Most aftermarket gauges gave a 30 day warranty. I guess I am a purest to an extent. Yes it cost more but I am willing to pay for quality work and materials. As far as turn around time, he got it back to me in 3 weeks. He is a busy man and is taking June and July off to rest and take a vacation. He is a joy to talk to and is incredibly knowledgeable at his job. I sure hope he is training someone to take his place when he finally retires again. He also repairs IH, Oliver, and JD I think, and vintage car gauges.

Ive sent a couple tachs to him this year and they came back very nice. My 170 is counting hrs again! I also bought a cheap India tach new for my 190 years ago before I knew they could be rebuilt. Will be interesting to see when it quits, its currently over 300hrs.
I also prefer OEM over aftermarket whenever possible, for originality and reliability.

I figure if it lasted 60 years, it will still be working after I’m gone lol. Ran it for over an hour this afternoon and it’s smooth, no bounce. Hour meter is ticking along as it should. Man, I sure love my 82S on this D17 Diesel. Now I know how many hours until oil change.

I don't find them confusing... pretty straight forward, actually...
Top increments 0-20... that's engine RPM x 10. needle on 18, you're at 1800. The 800, 1000, 1200 incrementations are missing because of the "Engine RPM" legend... but to make up for it, they added hash marks for increments for 900, 1000,1100, 1200, and 1300.
Bottom increments 200 to 500 is PTO rpm. See the thick black line going from middle of top scale's 1600's? that's the setpoint for a 540 implement.
All the rest of the increments are ground speed in MPH. The four in the top half, are high range, the four in the bottom, low range, nearest to center is 1st, then 2nd, etc.
Visibility position? Yeah, it certainly ain't up where you can see it, but when you're blasting into a radar-photo speed trap at 11mph, you should probably have your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road, in case a turtle runs out in front of you chasing a snail. Most of the time, a guy uses the tach to get his PTO speed set right, then the rest is all in the ear, listening to the change of note from the engine... unless you're deaf from years of loud machinery, like my grandfather... in which case, you feel it shake your skull through your spine. At least it's not a Harley... or a KZ400...

most of the cut rate tach i have installed over the years dont last long or they fade out and you cant read them . looks like this place starts your hours where the machine or the tach quit at i like that better than staring at zero

Maybe I'm just lucky. I've put the gauges out of India in all (3) of my tractors, all still look good and operate as they should. I've even had my supplier make a couple of custom gauges for both my 7000 and my Massey.
It is nice we have options though!

Haim gives you a choice if you want it at zero or when it quit working. I will say, i cant be happier with his work. I am glad I had the original repaired. Certainly not putting anyone down that chooses to go overseas but I choose to support American business.
