so im working on the 190 and finally got time to take it out for a ride around the feilds. it has the common problem of poping out of 3rd when going just down hill. just wondering how long of a job it is to replace and fix this problem. ive herd that u pretty much have to disasmble everything but any idea time wise it will take? is it just replacing the gear? any help would be great. also just wondering if something eles is wrong. if i park the tractor on a slope, and put it in first to keep it there it will still roll.? ive never had this so one night i parked it out next to the shop on a grade and woke up to it out in the feild beind me. just wondering if this is normal and or what would cause this. thanks again

The parking thing is normal.  The tractor has a 2 speed powershift called a power director.  What this means, is that any time there is not hydraulic pressure to one of the power director clutch packs, there is no mechanical connection between the transmission and the engine.  Thus, you are free wheeling when the engine is shut off.  In 1st gear, it will probably not move very fast, as there is some viscous drag in the clutch pack, but it will start to roll if on enough of an incline.  NEVER tow the tractor in gear to try and jump start it, you might send the power director clutch pack through the torque tube.

For 3rd gear, sometimes you get lucky with a bent/worn shift fork or a detent that needs a new spring/ball, but usually you will find that the gear has been ground into gear in the past and rounded off the teeth in the 3/4 coupler and on the mainshaft 3rd gear.  To fix it, you have pull the rear end apart (axles, drop the bull gears, pull the pinion shafts, remove the differential, then take out the pinion shaft, etc...) and split it at the rear end housing and the torque tube.  Parts are still available (both AGCO and aftermarket) for repairing the gears if you don't have a really early 190xt.  I'm sure others will chime in and give some more information on the specific time it takes, but that's going to be hard as it depends on your experience and the equipment/shop you have to work with, and then there's the fact I seem to spend more time waiting on parts than actually fixing stuff lol.

The 190 has a Hydrualic clutch, called the power director clutch, it is the high and low on the console. When you shut the engine off the pump no longer apllies pressure to the clutch pack and after a little while it will roll. You should always set the parking brake when you are leaving the tractor.

It will roll without the brake set , the hyd. clutch doent have any pressure and she will roll even in gear  - be carefull there !!! ALWAYS SET THE BRAKE OR CHOCK THE WHEEL , the gear pop out is common , i think its a poor design from AC  , but is caused by operators grinding into gear ; you can pop the top off the tranny and mess with the shifting forks , sometimes the forks are wore and need welding up , there is an updated new fork that does help the engage the gears better together ,,,,, but most of the time a complete tear down is required , 3 pt , back wheels, axles , etc all come off and work thru the back , very labor intensive , parts aint bad but its just aggrivating ; this has been covered alot , some others wil chime in and help i.m sure

Thats what sucks is all it takes is to hold against the shifter and it will stay in ; makes you think it cant be much wrong - its just getting to the problem -

In our oldtime racing days; we used to hook a rubber strap on the shifter to hold some of them old cars in 2nd gear.

They will stay in gear if you hold the shifter, but that can get pretty tiring real quick.  Just had mine fixed because it jumped out of 4th.  As several have said earlier, a complete teardown of the tranny/rear end is needed to truly solve the problem.  Mine was a combination of a worn shifter fork, bad bearings on the input shaft (could lift the shaft up and down while still fastened in the transmission case).  The gear was slightly damaged too.

However, it was a good opportunity to go through everything and put new bearings and seals in.  The only thing that was not touched was the outer axle seal - I've found out it is leaking now!!!
