our d-19 gas keeps chewing up the gear on the tach drive . its allways the same cross gear never the distributor gear. every thing is new. anyone ever try a alternator driven tach like off a 170 or 180? I heard they were noted for this.

Check for a bushing in the distrubitor housing that holds the stub end of the cross gear. I've never pulled the cross gear out of my 190 and looked but My corvette had tach drive problems. The bushing was bad. Replaced it and haven't bought another cross gear in 20 years.
