UPDATE for the '37 WC: After further analysis, I found a crack in the top half of the casting that causes leaks. I took upon it to order a refurbished carburetor and once it came today I put it on and after several tries to pull start the tractor it did turn over and run adequately enough I could drive with it. However it still has several issues. It sounds as though it's running on only 2 cylinders. I checked and all four plugs have a spark. Any thoughts?

sometimes hard to narrow down if its fuel related or electrical...If we ASSUME the new carburetor is correct......... how about the mag condenser / coil / plug wires / spark plug age ?

It's got a new mag and plugs. The wires are original.

The first thing I would do is to try to figure out which cylinders are firing. Grounding the plugs out should let you know which cylinders are dead. A few potential problems come to mind. Champion spark plugs? They are junk right out of the box. You say "original wires". Are you sure they are solid wire? Do you have consistent, steady fuel flow? MANY of these old tractors have fuel issues. As was said earlier, check your mag rotation. #2 and #3 can be easily switched.

Sounds like you have replaced or repaired almost everything....When you go thru the list and nothing appears to be wrong, its time to start over... Obviously something has a problem even thou it is new or repaired or adjusted correctly..
Checking compression might be a good idea . Were the valves adjusted ? Could one be too tight ? NEW spark plugs do fail... OLD wires could have cracks and short out... etc.. |
