I need to Change the transmission and final drive oils in my 180. I have searched on here, and the opinion seems to be Hyd/Trans fluid in the Trans, and gear oil in the finals. I have the original operators and parts manuals for this tractor. The operators manual calls for AC special gear lube in the trans and finals, but in the parts book it calls for trans and hyd power fluid 821 in the trans, and nothing is listed for the final drives. My assumption is that either would be ok in the trans, but are there any benefits of one over the other here?

When 821 oil came out, AC recommended its use as the transmission lube in older tractors whose owners manuals would have called for gear lube. Just like how General Motors today recommends the use of Dexron VI oil in all automatic transmissions back to 1948.

Thanks for the replies. I put Traveler brand Hyd/Trans fluid in the transmission. It had the 821 spec listed, and it was on sale. Win-win.
I haven't got around to the final drives yet. How necessary is it to drop the pans? Seems to me if I can get the old gear lube out with a suction gun, and it doesn't look glittery, that should be good enough to go ahead and refill.

Be careful with the Traveler brand, it's thin, when it gets hot it's real thin, Extreme Purflo is one of the best replacement for A.C. 821

Ok I'll keep that in mind. I'll probably change it again before too long. The old stuff had probably been in there about 20 yrs. My filter supply house carries a lot of the extreme line.
