I have 2 D 12s  1 recently acquired ser # D12-3537 appears to be 6 volt positive ground ?
it has a 12 volt battery hooked up neg ground. ammeter runs negative 15-18 ? Doesnt seem right. any thoughts ?  tag on generator is stamped 12 volt

2nd tractor series 3 ser # D12-9355 Has 12 volt battery negative ground, not charging.

would like to know what the systems should be on each of these ?

Early D series were 6 volt positive ground.. Later changed to 12 v Positive ground.. In the last 50 years many people have changed them over to 12v Negative ground to match their car/ truck .... The starter  and battery dont care... As you said, if you have a 12v battery, it is best to have a 12v generator to match.. Also a 12v Voltage regulator to go with it..The amp meter will run backward if the system was POS ground and you connect the battery NEG ground.. switch the wires on the terminals on back of the amp meter. .... the HIGH AMPS shows that you battery is very low, or your Voltage Regulator has some problems... Many people have just converted over to an alternator with Internal Regulator and simplified the system .....

for testing of the gererator --- read this..

Its really up to you if you want it Original, or if you want upgrades... Might be nice to have ALL the tractors THE SAME.... My vote would be 12v Negative ground .... Your choice if that is with a generator/ regulator , or a new alternator.

this would be a common alternator to use... It eliminates the Voltage Regulator, couple old wires, and the generator.... you need to modify the mount a little to fit.. ONE WIRE or 3 WIRE will work...... if you decide to go with alternator, we can give you more info..
