    Posted: 21 Nov 2018 at 11:28pm
Oppossums and skunks killed off my chickens several times- they don't get that far anymore.

My wife placed sticky tray traps in kitchen cupboards to catch mice.  Why?  Well, when they get into your food, dishes, utensils, tupperware, etc., then urinate and deficate in it, you can be really certain that your family's health will decline.  She reasoned that the sticky-trap would be 'more humane' than the electronic ('Rat Zapper') or the variety of spring traps.

We have a team of cats inside and outside the house that are formidable sentries that kill mice that aren't wise enough to maintain cover, but there's plenty of places in the house that cats simply cannot reach.

Consider the psychological ramifications of a sticky trap... and being hunted down by a feline many orders of magnitude larger than yourself...  they don't sound so appealing in comparison to a quick, sudden extinguishing.

Take a mouse, and increase it's size by about 1600x.  Give it practically opposable thums, with more nerve endings in it's fingers, than in your entire body, then add the cognative capacity to operate a combination lock... and give it the constitution to poop every two minutes, and the strength to break windows, peel steel siding, pull nails and chew through hardwood planks...  And rather than pooping in your cupboards, it breaks into your barn, tears through five layers of heavy canvas tarps, into a 1954 Century Resorter with ORIGINAL INTERIOR, and in a matter of one hour, turns an $86,000 piece of marine history, into a destroyed mess...  Watch it tear the hinges off the upper door of your grain bin, climb in, and ruin 16,000 bushels of perfect corn... and rip off the belts of your stirrator... destroy your hay bales, make your horses and cattle sick.

It's not some fascination with cruelty... it's about protecting what you've built.

I made specific note of 'city people', because what I described above-  'relocating' is what 'city people' think is somehow morally superior.  To protect THEIR homes, they live-trap, then transport animals to an alien environment, and set them free, where those animals invade someone ELSE's domain.

City people drive down my road, and while they're driving, throw unwanted cats, kittens, and dogs out the windows of moving cars...  I have no idea how they can justify that action as being in ANY way morally acceptable, as most of the time, the animals that survive, are severely injured.  Apparently they believe these domesticated animals can fend for themselves (most can't), and they fail to realize that a dog or cat with a broken leg, dislocated hip, or partially blinded, winds up being chased by packs of coyotes until it dies of exhaustion.

Dealing with problems is not something that can be judged from a position well-insulated from another's realm.  I've never had problems with armadillos or wild boars, never had carpenter bees, termites, buzzards, tree squirrels, or badgers... no wolves, no bears, and no poisonous snakes here, but I won't judge someone who does... and I don't mind venison in my refrigerator, but my wife doesn't allow it... so I don't hunt deer... but I won't turn down deer sausage sticks EVER!
Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest.

My bear bait! I could have more coons than bear. Oh by the way possums do eat mice, rats and other undesirable things. To bad they look like big rats. Coons I guess trap them and let them go elsewhere.

All above are good choices! Cat food ( wet or dry) does best here for me. Fish in any form works good. So far I only got 1 big ole field cat, and he was not hurt, (just pissed), and the only 2 cats I have left don't go in the traps.
I did get a rabbit in one of the coyote traps the other night!--so far can'y get the coyotes to go in! they just run past! thanks; ac fleet

The fly bait works quickly. I'm not making light of the situation because raccoons and possums are a common carrier of rabies and distemper. The last thing I want to see is my dogs tangle with a rabid wild animal or manage to bite my wife and kid. They're like rats and mice, nobody thinks twice about poisoning them. If they went after mice and rats that might be a little bit different, but as it is they can be dangerous and do damage.

Securely wire the bait can in the center of the trap so they have to enter trap to get at it. I used cat food as my bait.

Coons are like big Rats. Everyone kills Rats with poison and traps. There is no difference. My favorite is the bucket trap for Rats. I wonder if you could duplicate it with a 50 gallon drum for Coons

I don't see how poison bait or a shot, is cruel. I also don't see how dropping the live trap into a 55 gallon barrel of water is cruel.  all achieve sure death quickly.  How did you dispatch your deer, Dave, if I may be so bold, as to ask?Wink

I used a small can of moist cat food in my live traps. wasn't worried about catching any cats as the POS city bots dogs all came over and killed all our outside cats. PffffT! caught lots of coons, I then take them up to the stockholders place and turn them loose!

Well here we go gain down the that gruesome road on how to be cruel to animals.  That really turns me off.  I am of the opinion that animals have rights also.  I am not a vegetarian and also have a nice buck mounted on the wall in my bar area.  However making humor out of wantonly dispatching animals is beyond me.

i thought maybe there was another person that had the same thoughts in that Ken asked about bait for a trap which I assumed was  live a trap.

Golden Malrin fly bait in Coke. No need for a live trap, they don't make it more than a couple feet from the bait. To dispose of them just do a DOT style tall grass burial...

"Relocated"?  I've had city people bring out raccoons in live traps.  I walk out with my .410 and stand there...  let 'em know that they can open 'em, I'll let 'em get to a safe spot away from them before I blast 'em...

They get all snotty about it...   apparently they don't think it's appropriate to protect one's property when it's anyone other than THEM.

I live trapped  bunch t my daughter's house using dry ct food.  But that was readily available an was also what was initially attracting them.

The last two SOB's started moving the trap to eat the food that was originally inside.  Confused

I screwed the trap to the deck and they could not resist and I got their butts and relocated them.  Kinda unnerving unscrewing the trap from the deck so I  could take the ole boar for a ride.  LOL

In boy scout camp, the boys had to hang their bags of marshmallows by wire in the trees. Coons would invade their tents/hooches to eat marshmallows. It was common for some of the boys to hide their stash from the other guys, couldn't fool the coons.

If I used anything other than marsh mellows, I would always have a trap full of cats in the morning.  I guess if you need to trap cats the other stuff will work.
