Received my nice clean rebuilt pump back from Ed. Went in just fine. Very simple to time these with the reversible pin to put in the flywheel and lining up the marks in the window. My question is, there is no timing pin or pointer on the engine cover where the pump bolts to. And with all the old paint on the pump I never saw the 0-12 degrees marking until Ed cleaned up the pump. Is there supposed to be a pointer or punch mark on that cover?

My question must have everyone stumped? With the timing marks lined up I am at 23 BTDC. 0-12 degrees would be to advance but with no pointer to go by it seams like a shot it the dark. I’m sure AC had some point of reference. Seams odd that I do not have a pin, a detent or a pointer? My manual doesn’t mention any of those.

Can't help you with any advice since I don't remember what I had to do when installing the rebuilt pump on Our D17 diesel back in 1980. Thou I still remember what caused the failure... somebody parked the D17 by the gas pump and filled it and then went disking forgetting it wasn't the D17 gas he was filling up. Glad it wasn't me that did it. Bet your bill wasn't $131 bucks... just found this slip a couple days back. ![]() |

I'm confused....you first say easy to time with "reversible" pin to put in flywheel and align timing marks in window....then there is no timing pin or pointer....where's the 0-12 marks? On the mount flange? What is timing spec? Is marks lined up "0" in the pump? Gas tractors had timing mark on flywheel. Diesel too? I'm telling ya...your going to get smarter......

Those marks on top of the flange don't really mean anything for what you're doing. They are there for someone needing to change it 2* or something like that, or some other application may have used them. You just need to line the 2 lines inside the window up with each other while the flywheel pin is inserted. Easy as pie. You are overthinking this Robbie lmao! They eventually did away with the marks on the flange due to the confusion it causes.

Steve, on the series 1 there is a pin at the rear adapter plate that you unscrew. Rotate the engine until number 1 cylinder until it comes up on compression stroke. Line up the timing marks in the pump window. The pin will go into the adapter plate hole into the flywheel. This is 23 BTDC with a 12A pump. I know that I am timed correctly, and I do not intend to alter the factory setting. My question is the pump has a 12 degree scale on the mounting flange that you can go by to advance the timing if needed but no mark on the mounting plate of the engine. Just was curious why I’m not seeing a pin, detent, or pointer for reference. Crank pulley does not a timing strip on it so that’s no help. Not a big deal , but just was wondering if anyone ran into this before. I’m not going to start the tractor for a while as I have it stripped down preparing to paint it.

WAG here but i'm thinking with pin in flywheel and marks lined up,you're there. Those flange marks are irrellevent to to anything other than an aid for fine tuning. Once together I would roll it around carefully and re pin it then check pump marks to see it isn't off a shade. On my 220 you have timing degrees on pulley and a crude pointer on timing gear hsg. You set that on desired degrees and line up pump marks and done. Your pin is more accurate than my pointer. Again, just guessing but seems logical.

Been a while since had pump off 220 but I think I put a center punch mark on mnt plate by "0" on pump....just because.

It is resolved and now I just need to realize that there was never a detent or pin to go by. The 12 degree scale threw me off and I just like knowing all I can about this tractor. Appreciate you guys helping me work through this.

Installed all my lines today, patience is key lol. Wasn’t happy I had to remove a previously installed line, oil line to the head and remove the oil filler neck to get a stubborn one to number 5 injector started. Can’t wait to hear it run again in a few weeks. Still have a lot to do before painting can begin. Have the tank removed so that area can be painted first. Thanks Ed for the pump rebuild.

After a few weeks delay due to hay season and other priorities I finally pulled the D17 outside for a good degreasing. Trying a new approach versus sand blasting that I normally do. Tried a wire wheel on a small section of the bell housing and it did pretty well. Also going to try oven cleaner that others have used. All my sheet metal is finished and prepped so I’m at the last stage before paint. Without sheet metal she looks so small.
