 Topic: Briggs and Stratton, Change Oil?

Some how or another (he thinks i enjoy it  ) I wind up with werking on this guy's small engine stuff.
So I got this ole (craftsman) Briggs lawn mower in that just doesn't seem to run right anymore. I pull the plug and it was 1/2 burned up and the air filter was 1/2 solid full of dirt. Changed them and fired it and it ran like a champ. I don't know much on how easy it starts since it is kinda cool out here.
i pulled the dip stick and on the lower part of it was a glob of stuff that was black and about the consistency of honey. This is one of those motors that does not have a drain plug on it. i am thinking of just topping the oil off and let her rip.
Anyone have a slick way of getting most of the oil out of these things. i am thinking of hooking the hoist on it some how and string it up so some runs back out of the fill tube. Second thought maybe a tube stuck down there and a work out with the turkey baster.
Anybody out there found a somewhat painless way of changing the oil?

Take the fill cap off and turn it up on it's side, it'll drain right out.

painless ..?? give it back to owner tell HIM to do it !!  seriously, drain gas, tip over but block up up 'somehow' so YOUR floor don't get HIS sludgey oil all over.... No drain plug reminds me of a JD rider I bought(2400$ for 200 !) cause the hydro unit was 'shot'....NO drain plug in it either( or magnets, of fill port or proper oil...) $50 later I had it properly running though...

Stick a oil vacuum straw in, pump up, and the oil is out quick, only about 20 oz in a 5 HP engine...
I have one similar to this, but cheaper(smaller) ones are available...

they sell oil pump out kits at Harley Davidson dealers too. usually you can find them at farm stores and car parts stores too, i'd just turn it upside down and leave it over night.

OK I am up to the tsk now, I think.
I keep thinking bout the time I drained the molasses out of a guy's tiller once and filled it up with what I use. That thing turned into a mosquito fogger.

o-k...drain the oil out, and re-fill it with straight STP. no other oil.

Warming the engine by running or other means will help draining, and try to drain so the oil doesn't pool up in the valve chamber.

IIRC, BMW and Mercedes have been changing oil via the dipstick for a number of years now. Makes a fella wonder if any particulate is left behind . . . . I think I would tip that thing on her side as mentioned, I still drive my A-C 816GT units up onto a 2x4 on one side, just to make sure I get all the Rotella out of the drain port on those B&S 16 twins overnight.

I went looking for a lawn mower last summer and was told that it was an added money saving feature, you never have to change the oil ever again. That didn`t go over too well with me.

If the sludge is that bad I'd drain what comes out right away then put some diesel in and let it sit over night before shaking it around a bit and pouring out.

I would make up the difference with ATF until it reads full then start it up and run for a few minutes then drain overnight before filling up with oil.

Brian gets the prize. I was surprised at how much of that stuff ran out.
I am filling her back u with 30 wt detergent and letting her rip.
It isn't mine and I got no interest in going the extra mile on this hog. It will probably be never changer (or checked) again.
