We've nearly complete the restoration of my '53 WD and I'm thinking about putting a sun umbrella on it since we'll be doing a fair amount of mowing (about 50 acres) with it. I'm wondering are those umbrellas very practical if anyone has experience with one and could share your insight? Also, I've seen a couple of different one advertised. If anyone has any insight on a certain brand or vendor, please let me know. Thank you in advance.

Buggy top style is supported from both sides (fenders usually) and will hold up better in the wind than the single pole rain umbrella style.

As the Doc said, the buggy style is what we have on the 180 planting tractor. It's easily folded "back" for standing on the platform, but now that I re-read your post, there's no "standing" on a WD platform

I have a buggy style on my WD for tractor rides, made brackets that bolt to the fender mount bolts so didn't have to drill the fenders.

I have a single pole umbrella and I will admit it can be aggravating when running in full gallop(wide open throttle)on the highway or if it is windy outside. I love the looks of them and most times it’s not a problem. They do a pretty good job of blocking the sun. Not a fan of the buggy style but I’m sure they do a good job and are very robust. Call Ken at 816-806-0222, he sells both styles.

I have a single pole umbrella as well. Easy to take off and store when not needed or if you have to go under low hanging branches. Unless it is real windy I don't usually have problems. As ac720man said it does do a real good job of blocking the sun. The local TSC or Orscheln usually has umbrella and/or covers in stock. On a side note, I mount mine on a wd45 using a plate with a piece of angle iron welded to it that sites between the toolbox and the fender. It is also stabilized by another piece below the toolbox, and maybe one rod. Only existing factory holes were used to mount it.
