Ok so Chuck's blown up D19 hydraulic pump questions and pictures got me thinking about the return line coming from the remote valve back to the hyd sump. From the factory the line is plumbed into the bottom front left of the sump like shown on mine here...


I have seen a few where the line is bent up so that the return oil dumps up into the torque tube higher up, possibly above the pump, like this...(Not my tractor)


Or have had a hose installed to dump the oil back in there also like this... (Again not my tractor)


At least one of mine had the tube bent up and dumping back into the torque tube like the second picture, but I changed it back cause it looked funny to me.

My question is if anybody on here has done, noticed, seen, or knows why this was done in the past? Was there a service bulletin from A-C or was it done by technicians in the field to dump the oil on top of the pump to keep the rollers lubed on tractors that were neglected and ran low on oil?

I also noticed that the littler D series with the remote valve set up return to the higher up port on the torque tube along with the D17 SIV even though it doesn't have a belly mounted pump.

Any thoughts or answers are appreciated in advance.

Travis, this would be great to find out if this is a better option to do.   If it means my next pump won't go atomic, I'm game on changing it and providing some extra lube to those rollers.

The I-600 I just got returnes low in the sump pan like the first pic. I'm not the expert on this at all but it looks to me like if it has 3-point it plumbs low since it has the different draft control linkages to the valve than the Snap coupler.
Yea, I can fix that.....

Chuck my hyd cam was destroyed last spring. I mounted the little front pump and my control stack return line is like pic #2. It works great.

So Dana, was your return line plumbed into the top before when your original pump took a crap?   I'm wondering if it's worth doing it to my tractor before I install another pump.    I did look at my d17 series 4 this morning and that line is plumbed in up high like in pic 2 and it is snap coupler.

Chuck, I think that once you get it all cleaned out and back in working order you shouldn't have any issues with the return at the bottom. My best guess is back in the day when the 19 was probably the work horse on the farm and used to plow in the fall then disk followed by the spring field work is when they had failures.

My diesel in the top picture is one of my favorite and most used toys that I have owned for ten years now. I move snow in the winter and plow with it almost every year and I have not had any problems with it. Granted we are only talking about 50 hours a year, if even that.

Unless someone shares more info as to why some of the return lines were changed I plan to leave mine at the bottom.
