I have a 1961 d-17 with a noisy bearing growl. It happins in 1st,2nd and 3rd gear but not 4th, both in high and low side. The housing that contains the hand clutch gets really hot after running her for awhile. If i put the foot clutch in going down a hill the noise stops. Any ideas? Thanks.

Countershaft bearing in the transmission for the noise (bad rubber gearshift boot lets water and dirt in the tranny) and the hand clutch compartment getting hot is another issue.

If it is the countershaft bearing don't let it self-destruct, otherwise you may be looking for a new rear housing.

What is the easiest way to diagnose the bearing problem. My 170 does the same thing with the noise in tranny. Really annoying. Thanks Tracy Martin

Kind of sounds like tranny or final drives. It does go away when you depress clutch and it free wheels. You can feel it in fenders at times. Tractor sat about 20 years in a barn. It does sing when in high gear and traveling down the road, noise changes when going down a hill and louder when going up a hill. Any help appreciated. Thanks Tracy Martin

Those sounds are similar to my 175, and my rear housing has been replaced. I'm not sure how you would determine that bearing failure, It would surely affect shifting at some point I would think.

There are some One-Seventy's that have a terrible howl in the rear end when roading.....they've been like that since they left Milwaukee, unfortunately......nothing wrong or an impending failure, just noisey. Take the fenders off sometime and drive it......mucho quieter.

I would say tear it down and inspect everything would be the best way. Sounds like alot of work, but downside is if it fails, you are looking at $$$ to fix, if you can afford to lay the machine up, tear into it, and inspect it you'll be better off in the long run. Good time to replace seals, anything else needed also.
