I was givin my Uncle's old D-17 diesel Allis as a gift from my Aunt after he passed away last year and am having a hard time figuring out what year the tractor is based off the serial # that we believe is the right number but do believe he has said it was a 1963 but he also did have a few other allis-chalmers other than just the 17, but the only number we could find is 5-N35619D. If anyone could help me out figuring out what year it is I would much appreciate it. Thanks!

tractor serial number is on the bell housing (I think on the left side if I remember correctly).  It's on a flat area that may be covered with grease.  Starts with D17

Look for the serial number where the arrow is pointing.

Thanks for the help we found the right serial # which was close to the one I gave it was D1735619D which would mean it was manufactured in 1961.

Does it run? I finished overhauling my D17D engine about this time last year. Definitely not an inexpensive engine to repair...

It does run, I think one of the  intake valve is sticking so it will need a valve job done as soon as I get it shipped across the states from my Uncle's old farm in NY to Wyoming. I will probley end up doing a complete engine overhaul on it just to have it done so I can work it this summer. Do you know what series the 1961 D17 diesel is? I have no record of this tractors history other than my great grandfather bought it brand new in 62' or 63' and it has stayed in the family since then but my Uncle lost a lot in a garage fire years ago and lost all the records and service manuals to it and almost lost the tractor as well.

I'm pretty sure that 61 is in the "unofficial" series 2. I need to have Norm Swinford's book on A-C open to say for sure. What makes you think you have a valve sticking? Runs a bit rough cold? If it runs good warm, don't mess with it. A few years ago I bought what I thought was a nice running series 1 D17D and got a first hand education. It ended up blowing the head gasket. When I pulled it apart I found that all of the sleeves had dropped below the deck on the block. This is a pretty common issue for the 262 diesel and not cheap to fix. I had cracks around 10 head bolt holes so I ended up finding a gas block from a combine.
Hopefully TomMn will see this and post the link to his write up on his WD45D. The WD45D's mechanical and machine work requirements are pretty much the same. That will give you an idea what to expect if you need to do any heavy engine repairs.

The D17 I have posted in the picture above is a 1958, serial number 14970.  This style ran until Serial number 24001.  The black bar grill models were 1959-1960 models, SN range 24001-31625.  The 1960-1962 D17's were the unofficial Series II models (black bar grill gone) and were 32001-41540.   The series III tractors (lights on fenders among other changes) were 42001-43358 in 1962.  Then in 1963, they started at 65001 and ran to 72768 in 1964.  Series IV started at 75001 in 1964 and went to 89213 in 1967.  You can see there were some gaps in the serial numbers, especially between 43358 and 65001.

My Uncle knew this tractor up and down and just before he got sick last year he fired the D17 up and was not running right and said it was going to need a valve job before it goes back to work in the field for the summer and my brother went up to the farm a couple weeks ago and got it running and ran it up to his place and he also said it has a weird spudder to it and is sure not running right like a valve stuck open but I wont know for sure until I get it out here and listen to it for myself but I know about three years ago when I last operated it it was running great but has sat for about two years now.
