 Topic: 3 BALERS IN THE SHOP

I have saved a few balers from the junkers. I picked up a new holland #68 and a massey ferguson #3, and our old #268 is in need of some work. This makes 5 balers that I now own. My plan is to repair and rebuild them so they will bale hay this summer.

I am not sure who made these. It is the first one I have ever seen. The owner says it was a baling fool until he left it outside one winter then it started to heat up as the plunger slid on the slides. It is complete and seems well built. I believe I can remove thwe plunger slides clean the debris and rust out from under them, readjust them and try baling with it.

DAD had a 68 back in the day with a Wisconsin engine thrower . Kind a wish we still had it for sentimental value. Traded it in on a JD 336

The Massey brings back memories. As a kid, we had a #10 that looked identical to the #3 in the picture. I remember a lot of trouble with the knotters, but once we finally got them adjusted properly, it wouldn't miss more than one or two in a field.
As far as I know, Massey made them. If I remember the tag correctly, ours was made in Canada by Massey.

We had a massey #12 and it never tied right. We had the dealer out riding on it for hours at a time.
That was 35 yrs ago kept it 2 or 3 years and got a 268 NH. Never looked back. Have a 326 NH now. It's 20 years old now and has been overhauled once for a sixth the cost of a new one. Last fall my Brother's 2 yr. old NH was acting up and he came and got mine to finish up. I just grinned, didn't want to jinx myself. Nick

If anyone is interested in it, somewhere I have aa owner/operators manual for a Massey model 3 baler if I can find it. I haven't seen it in a while, but I think it is an factory manual not a reprint. Don't hold me to that!

Got either an old 66 or 68 I need to scrap out. It has been sitting for the past 16 or so years. That baler followed Dad's WD for many years. That is one NICE shop!

HAD A HAYLINER 67 & A 268 NH. NEITHER WOULD MAKE A NICE TIGHT BALE LIKE MY BROTHERS ALLIS 303.

We use a #9 massy baler it's not to bad. Last year it didn't want to take off and after breaking a knotter part we found out there is two places that need to be polished and cleaned after setting for winter. I adjusted a few things per book and it probably only missed a half dozen bales all year. It can't handle to much at a time but the worst part is if you run down a extra small windrow the bale will be long and loose. We did get a bad batch of twine from rural king you couldn't even lift the bale with out breaking the string.

I had a # 68, put up a lot of hay and straw with it. At one time New Holland sold 49% of all bailers sold. When Massey-Ferguson came out with a bailer it was very popular.

Nice shop! Our 50 plus years 68 knotter is well worn. Where can I get parts? Last year a 68 sold on an auction and after the sale looked at the knotters which had little wear. Could have switched knotters and made 65 lb bales again. Need to get there on time! Joe Northwest Ohio

The 268 is a great little baler.I baled alot of hay with one .I had a 68 that would never missed a tie, that thing was amazing.I remmember baling real heavy hay and it would start banging and making all sorts of sounds so I would push in the hand clutchfor it to ease up a little and it would suck in another 100 feet of windrow and I would wait with a feelling of dred thinking that something was going to brake but it never broke, missed a bale or sheer a pin .Those were good times

I loaded 2000 bales of hay one day behind a new New Holland 68. Had a Ford 6000 in front. Five 9'x16' hay racks, and two elevators at the barn to keep up. Got 2 cents a bale, and cashed a check for $40 from a happy farmer. I was 16 years old. Went home, milked 60 cows then went swimming that evening. Slept good that night. Later on I owned a 273 New Holland with a belt kicker, another real good baler. Powered it with a 1958 D17 diesel.

Timing instructions for the MF model 3 are on the baler. They are at the right end of the pick-up head on the baler chamber cover or sidewall. My father and I used one for many years with good results. It sat idle for many years but I got it back in action 2 yrs ago. It had problems making consistent bales last season and I bought new knotters, guide bearings, and bale wedges. I have not figured out how to install the knotters yet. I also added new chamber slides but still bought a NH 565 with a pro quality hay basket to use this season. I cannot wait to use it since I have very little late model equipment of any kind to use. I am trying to break my addiction to rusty iron.

Did all you fellers know that the reason for painting JD balers green was so they could hide in the grass while those red balers just slipped right on by......
