    Posted: 09 Jul 2015 at 7:00pm
I inherited a mess, this tractor has been worked on by numerous people! this is a D-17 gas AllisChalmers tractor S/N is in the 18000 range so I think that makes it about 1959. It has a generator - no alternator.
I was using it for a few days working fine and then it would no longer start and would only make a clicking noise, so I bought a new battery and cables, this did not fix the problem so I ordered a new solenoid because it was clicking inside the solenoid! this did not solve my problem,  I banged on the starter with a hammer a few times and it started right up so I ordered a new starter and that solved the ticking problem but created a NEW problem I cant solve --- now the starter engages continuously when I hook up the positive battery cable,  so I ordered a new ignition switch and also got a new regulator while I was at it but this did not solve my starter engaging problem, the starter still engages when battery is hooked up. I completely disconnected the generator from everything and still have the same problem. I disconnected everything from the ignition switch and still have the same problem.....
Does anyone know what I might be missing and why the starter engages full time now?
Thanks for the help very much,
Tony from Idaho :)

with the starter off and the solenoid wired, does the solenoid engage and disengage when you go from start to on?

Sounds like your solenoid is stuck, test it as noted above.

It is a brand new solenoid that I just bought at yesterdaystractors.com.
With the starter cable disconnected I turn the ignition key all the way clockwise and the solenoid makes a click sound each time I cycle the key.
It is doing the same thing it did before I changed the solenoid a couple of weeks ago.
here is a 1 minute video of what it is doing, it does the same thing with the old solenoid and the new one, it clicks once.

You need a test light. You should have power going to the starter only when the solenoid is activated. It should be activated only when the small wire S terminal on the solenoid has power going to it when you turn the key to start. Sounds to me like the solenoid is stuck or ignition switch is bad or wired wrong.

Take the small wire off solenoid then hook up battery cable. If it is ok then, you are getting power to solenoid all time for some unknown reason.    MACK

You say you installed a new ignition switch.  Is it possible that you put the wrong wire on the wrong post?

All solenoids make a click when you turn the key to the start position, unless the coil is bad. The click is a a plunger pulled into position by an electro magnet powered by your start switch. when the start switch is engaged, the magnet pulls the plunger , making contact between your battery cable and the starter cable.
Remove the small wire from the solenoid that goes to your new start switch and connect it to the lug on the switch that ONLY has power when the key is turned to the start position.
If it wants to crank the engine all the time, you have power to the solenoid all the time.

Power to the green wire is ONLY when the key is turned far right and held there. You probably don't have any safety switches in line so forget that part. The contacts in the solenoid as shown is what makes the click when they slam closed.

Excellent illustration, Charlie!

Note- this drawing is suitable for both positive and negative ground, just switch the polarity symbols on the battery.

Don't dispair, Tony- it's a simple problem, just takes basic understanding and a clear method of test.

BTW... the tractor is not a mess... it's just that you haven't cleaned all the dirt off to see the gem underneath!
Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest.
