Because there are plenty of people out there driving who damn sure shouldn't be!
Case in point: Coming from Dickinson home yesterday on interstate, on east bound side. About half mile ahead, I see two vehicles on the shoulder of the road on the west bound side, stopped. Didn't concern me much until I got a little closer, and all of a sudden, right beside these two vehicles, a pickup rear ends a car, had to have been at about cruising speed, and down into the median both vehicles go. Luckily they went towards the median, and not towards the parked vehicles. So, being right there, I pulled over, put on the flashers and ran over there. There were some people with the parked vehicles, so they had beat me to the wrecked vehicles, and already had 911 on the line. Kind of waited around to see if there was anything I could do. Two guys in the pickup had gotten out of it and didn't appear to be hurt too badly. Lady in the car, I wasn't too sure about, but people were not moving her, but keeping her alert. Mean time, another person was trying to get traffic shut down; was able to get people stopping in the driving lane. Then some idiot pulls into the passing lane at 75 MPH to go around the stopped vehicles, doesn't even slow down going past the scene, hits some of the debris and just sends it flying everywhere and keeps on cruising! Then a few more drivers have to pull the same stunt! Can't these people see....? Then while I am down by the two fresh wrecked vehicles, another guy who was with the vehicles parked on the shoulder is there to help too, AND LIGHTS UP A CIGARETTE!!!!!! Do I have to even see what could go south with that?
Guess that one of the vehicles stopped had stahled, and the brother of the lady driving it stopped to help her, so that was the second vehicle stopped. Wasn't really their fault, but lots of turmoil . Then the HP's and ambulance showed up and I left. Darrel

hay we got them up here.... Burlington  Skyway Bridge was down to 2 lanes from 4... this is THE major way to get from Buffalo to Toronto, so think TONS of cars and semis...
anyway for 3-4 miles signs are up 6-8 of them.... yet up until the 'oopsy' no more 2 left lanes ,idiots are cruising 70MPH to 'get ahead' of the 2 right lanes... basically 'butting in'.. even a semi...Lucky for the hog driver I was in wife's car otherwise he'd have been IN the 'lane closed' sign....

And they breed..... If I could only test the drivers license teachers out there, the roads would be practically empty.  The kids don't get any teaching about the law or laws of the road.  Just get in the car and drive around, and NOT correctly.  The teachers aren't even aware of OLD laws on the books, much less the new ones.  Here is costs upwards of $500 to take the mandatory drivers ed.  What a waste of money.....Now let's talk about respect and being courteous....the last person I saw who was courteous is probably around 35 now....

Problem is the driving schools (if you really want to call them that) as well as the DMV testersCensoredH$LL you don't even need to parallel park anymore to get a drivers licenseConfused The DMV just might as well farm out the license procurement to CrackerJacksShocked It seems Nowadays if you don't have an accident on the closed course where they give the driving test, you get a licenseThumbs Down
If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits.
If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY

That IS how licensing began, Dad walked into a Walgreens put his $1.95 on the counter and was handed his License, at fifteen in 1942.

i was working a semi accident one night, had 2 units a 1/4 mile either side of the scene to help slow traffic, one semi disreguarded them and came barreling past...my cal light did get one of his headlights! yep...they bare breeding, and if they would have got them stopped and checked, very possible they had already lost their drivers license and was driving without. our office in Omaha would have vehicle checks during the day, middle of the week, and checking...alot had warrants, most had suspended licenses, alot didn't have insurance, and some were already drunk! maybe 1/10th of the drivers stopped and checked...checked out o-k! so watch yourselves out there!

Yep,working on the roads doing pothole repair, guardrail replacement you had to have your head on a swivel! Semi's going by so fast they suck the hardhat off your head. The drunks used to line up on a plow truck at night because the flashing lights attracted them! People are distracted or just got to go. Had a car try to pass on the right one night plowing snow! When the snow discharge off the plow started to push him off into the ditch he backed off and stayed where he was supposed to be! Idiots!

Missoury implemented a law as to moving over for any side of the road emergency or maintenance vehicles, a FEW do it most do not and unenforceable as written. Would need a fleet of cops awaiting down the road to write the tickets and they do not have them.

About a week ago they had carnage on the interstate between Madison and Wisconsin Dells. cars running into each other hitting squad cars. I think the last one was a semi taking out a few vehicles including other semi and dump truck

It's sad most people don't look any farther than the hood of their vehicle when they are driving . We were in Vermont a couple years ago going to Maine and there was a lane closed sign, by the time we got to a sign that said one mile ahead everyone was in the open lane and the closed lane was empty. We were shocked never seen anything like that anywhere else.

Always liked to when I was driving semi and you would see a lane closed sign ahead, just get aside of another semi and run side by side until you were just a few hundred feet from the closed lane then one would just slow abit and let the other guy slip in line. sometimes the fourwheelers had figured out to get in line by then, if not? At least you weren't getting pissed off by cars passing and jamming in line.

If all the cars were self driving and somehow networked, I wonder if traffic in urban areas would improve.

Self driving cars aren't the answer either. Saw a video of the self driving car run into a over turned semi. Driver said he thought the car was going to stop, so he didn't try to override the cars controls, lucky he survived.

I've seen that a few times and always appreciated it.

Seems the carnage injuries and deaths do not stop here. So many that should NOT be driving as much as a go cart out behind the wheel texting away or reading something or trying to negotiate thru a email on a laptop in the passenger seat. Seen them all so not exaggerating. The idiots that have to have sex while driving are the lamest brained morons I have seen behind a wheel. If its that important GET A ROOM or at least pull off the road.
