Hmmm... dunno how YOU do it, but here's how I time every MAG-fired engine I've had to work on...

With a good running mag, I install it, and turn engine slowly with four plugs in the mag.  At each impulse, I watch the plugs fire, and determine which one is #1... then I install and connect that plug.  Then I continue to 2, 3, and 4.  I note, while hand cranking, when the impulse 'clacks' in  relation to the compression event... it should be just AFTER...

I get it close enough to start and run... and then, once running and warmed, a 'tweak' the mag position a wee bit 'till it sounds right, and doesn't balk or ping under load.

You could look for the timing marks, etc., but in the end, your ear will tell you wether it's too far, or not enough.

There was a post about this a little while back.  You may be able to find it.  Had great pictures.
Anyway, I alway used the "finger in the number one plug hole".  First remove the mag and time it for the number one cyl.  Upper right from rear.  Then remove number one plug and crank the engine till it hits top dead cernter.  You can check cause the mag coupler will be straight across with the set screw on top or bottom.  One is for the W tractors and one for the B-C.  That should get you started then adjust the ears till you get engine running smoothly.
Look under my name and you will find the post.  Believe it is under w 125 power unit.
In any event let us know how it goes.
Good Luck!
