If you get a real pretty red sun rise or sun set just thank Californy. All that smoke from about 900,000 acres the last week is headed your way finally. A guy over in Valentine had some good pictures on another tractor porn site last night.
Last week was not so good out here set a new record high for the day, ![]() ![]() ![]() Generally that southern moister gets up to San Diego and turns east helping cool Arizonan down or meets up with south eastern moister out of the Gulf of Mexico to make the flash floods. But this bunch came a bit north all the way to San Francisco or a little more. But finally the smoke is out of here for the first time since last Monday. Most days you could barely see a mile it was so thick and low. The closest bigger fire is 50 miles or more away from where Allis G and I are.

If they'd cut down some of the trees and that other stuff, it'd help a lot I'd think.
We're up in the 90's for the next week too. BAD for this time of year. Hope things get better all across the country. The weather is bad all over, drought in some parts, deluge rain in others, fires and etal. What's in store for this winter?? I hope Shameless only has enough water for cooking and doin dishes this winter! |

Quick question do those fires burn the same acres every year because of the dead trees left from the last fire? Because I would think the fire from the previous year would clean things up and promote new growth, or does it burn different areas each year?

Poor guy about 10 miles down the road lost about 20 newly baled big round bales tonight. They self ignited, sure produced a whole lotta smoke. Its been so dry here, no chance of rain for another 10 days. Don't understand his reasoning for baling them wet.

Weather here last week or so has been fantastic, highs in upper 90’s , clear sky’s, gentle breeze, not humid, actually could use a shot of rain.

I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

Between the fires in California and the ones here in Colorado, the air has been so smoky it's hard to breath for over a week. We had less the 1/4" of rain in July and so far only .3" this month. A lot of the irrigation ditches are going off as there has been no rain in the mountains that feed our streams. Maybe, maybe we will get some rain next week, but I'll believe it when I see it. So far, Denver has has 62 days with 90 and above temps this summer. Normal average is 44. My indoor/outdoor thermometer has been up to 105, today it was only 101!

i've been thinking about you Ray...was gonna ask you tonight if them fires were near you. i think it's been HOT about everywhere around us. i can't take the heat so i been pretty much holed up indoors PfffffT! i have been going out in the early mornings just before daylight and cutting some trees. Ted...if they cut out all them trees then just fire brush will grow and that stuff is real dangerous. i'm pretty sure alot of the same areas burn every year out there...with all the brush in the hills. glad your out of danger for now Ray...hope it stays that way for you and Allis G. we have been seeing some light colored sunsets, i figgered it was from the CO fires, i don't know how far away the smoke from CA is right now, but i'm sure we'll find out if/when it gets here. stay safe out there!

another reason CA should puts in a pipeline for water from the ocean...wouldn't even hafta treat it. fire depts could just tap into them closer to the fires.

Generally you have 5 to 10 years before the brush grows back so you can have a major fire in the same place. But with the great effort put forth from the 40's on with fire suppression there is so much fuel in the forested areas(look at Mel's post in the construction equip section for pics) they are burning much hotter than they use to. This does kill far more trees than the way nature use to do things. The chaparral low growing brush is the biggest part of the fuel in any wildfire. Not much confer forest in my area so cannot say much from observation of that (but again look at what Mel has said). For many reasons where chaparral brush grows not much grass ever grows even with the brush all burned away. The chaparral will come back from the roots most times in only a month or 2 after a fire before there is a rain. Surprisingly the young growth is very green and lush looking and is hard to get lit on fire until it is 5 years old or so. At which time the oldest growth starts dying back providing tinder to help a fire burn. Even if grass grows and gets on fire it is much easier to control. But besides the growth of burnable material on the ground geography plays a big roll in fire behavior. Fire travels up hill much, much faster than down hill. Canyons and ridges all come into play in what the fire fighters call chimneys. As hot air is rising the chimney will heat and many times spontaneously combust ahead of the main fire sometimes as much as mile ahead of the main fire. Many times the the top of the hills that form a chimney you have a fabulous view looking out for miles in many cases,so always where the new comes want to build their house to have this long view looking out. Natures way was to burn everything every 10 to 50 years. All the low brush and trees will not be killed even in the hotter burning fires of modern times. California is a big place 10,4765,440 acres so burning a 1,000,000 a year ![]() But with a little luck

I've been around hay making for nearly 50 years, and to this day I don't understand the reason for baling wet. "But rain is coming". Ok.....if the rain comes, it will damage they hay. If you bale it, IT WILL MOLD, damaging the hay, or much worse as in this case. ![]() |
