The D-21 prototype had D-series styling because of tractor company spies watching the proving grounds.

Even with that tin it's a mean looking machine! I wonder if all of the internals were the same seeing how that's a prototype.

Cool picture Dean. But I like the final look even better. That thing was certainly a trend setter back in the day! Looked cool then and looks even cooler now.

They should have somehow kept the snap on side hood arrangement.

Dean the picture that you posted is an artist's makeover of the production D21. The real prototype had a Waukesha engine with the exhaust and air cleaner in different location as seen in the video. A real version of the prototype build is in the planning stage !

Doug. It likely went like this. The race was on to have the first tractor over 100 hp on the market. Actually the JD 5010 was first but was a wheatland. D21 with the first row crop tractor over 100 hp (adjustable axle widths). The transmission and rear end were ready for production but the Harvey engine plant was still working on the engine. The 3400 (426) engine was the first direct injection engine designed for ag use. The 301 came later. The final design of the sheet metal and look was still being worked on. They needed to get the transmission and rear end tested NOW ! Down the road they go from Milwaukee and pick up 3 Waukesha 100 hp engines the same as the did for the first 96 B's and 27 WC's. Slap on some sheet metal that looks like the rest of the D series for now.
Look at the video and it's easy to see a much different engine. Some of this came from guys who used to work at the test farm.

It's pretty clear to me the team that designed the "look" and operators platform for the D-21 weren't involved much with the mighty One-Ninety, which was also in the designing stages at that time. The rear mounted fuel tank, seat track and suspension and suspended clutch/brake pedals were shared, but not much else. No "console control" for sure. Almost hard to believe the two models were even related. Maybe distant cousins ??

Interestingly the casting supporting the clutch and brake pedals is the same for the OneNinety, 210, and 220.
