Hi there, I'm new to this forum but not to AC tractors. First I'd like to say thanks for letting me join your forum. I have a couple of questions about a WD 45 diesel I just bought. The tractor has sat in the weeds for at least 15 years. I've read in a couple of places that before I try to turn the engine over that I should make sure the injector pump is not stuck. # 1- How do I go about that?
# 2- I think I know but would like to conform that this tractor has a 12 volt system , if so what battery does it take? Thanks in advance from Gary in Indiana

I need the answer to that same question. The electrical system used two six volt batteries hooked in series to make a 12 voly Positive ground system.

Most problems can be solved with the proper application of high explosives.

turn engine by hand with the fan. Parts for those pumps are so hard to find I just cringe every time someone even asks about them lol!

Is there anything that breaks before it takes out the pump ? Like the One Hundred series the pump shaft is smaller at a certain point so it breaks in pump lock up

So Ed you're saying, if I can turn the engine over by hand the pump is ok? Or if the pump is stuck I shouldn't be able to turn the engine over?

If pump is stuck, you shouldn't be able to turn it over by hand with the fan. If it is moving still doesn't really mean it will run and not seize later. There is a small key type driving member that drives the pumping plunger, and it is supposed to be what breaks in the event of a seizure. Well, when one of these won't start, and people keep trying and trying, they end up with it snapping the plunger as well, then it is time to find a different usable hyd head. They are very scarce, and when you find one that isn't seized, many times it is worn out. So finding good ones are very tough. There are so many different PSB heads that nobody wants to rebuild them because of all the differences, plus there's only hundreds of them out there, not thousands like other pumps.

DO NOT TURN IT AT ALL! No way, no how!
The pump plunger will break if it is stuck! And will cost dearly if it does. Take the pump off and send it out to an experienced pump guy; one who knows how to work with AMBAC PSB pumps. Do not turn it once it is out either! “ - I think I know but would like to conform that this tractor has a 12 volt system , if so what battery does it take?” It was designed and built with (2) 6-Volt group 1 batteries in series, for 12 volts. Batteries technology has gotten better. But put the largest capacity batteries you can fit in there. Edited by TramwayGuy - 03 Feb 2022 at 2:17pm |

The system is 12 volt positive ground. I use one 12 volt battery in mine, still positive ground. Without checking, I think the battery is a group 65. Just measure the battery box so you get one that is low enough and buy as many cranking amps as you can.

Thanks Mikez
I have a feeling there's a ton of information here that I can use in the future. I also hope I may contribute some too. |

Shcied Diesel in Indiana can have the head on the pump rebuilt , but it will take several months to get it back.
