WD45 Air filter

Hello Fellas..

So how does one clean the air filter mesh? Mine has bunches of weed seed embedded in the mesh, air hose works onlt to a point...would like to flush it out but not sure how? The metal that holds it in the cannister looks like it could come off but not sure how you do that without bending up the tabs....Is that piece still available from AGCO? Heck I would just buy the mesh and replace if it and the metal plate was avaialble

So how does one re-weld? Dont have a spot welder! Confused

I drilled out the spot welds holding the steel retainer, about 10 of them. I was concerned about re-spot welding too. But as mentioned it stays in place fine when the assembly goes back together. I just clean the mesh, but they do sell new mesh too.

Here is how bad mine was: YUK! Retainer is removed in this picture. You may need to sand or grind the drilled out spot weld burrs on both part to get a good fit.

Pull the mesh out of the air box. I think there are three sections of mesh. Top one will not be too bad.

Hope this helps a little? BTW I thru the bottom mesh away and just went with two. It was just too bad to even clean up. Sounds like yours is not that bad. (I soaked the mesh in gas and unrolled them and blew the debris out with compressed air. Wound them back up, stuffed them in the air box, placed the retainer back on and installed the airbox. Filled the cup to the line with motor oil and your good for another 60 years!

If you do not care about the paint on it, throw it in a hot tank if you have one available locally. I put a few of mine in my neighbor's hot tank, both came out as clean as a whistle, and without a stitch of paint!

I tore the one on my D17D apart and it was almost as bad as Sugarmaker's. Evidently my D17D baled a lot of hay in it's life. I just carefully drilled out the spot welds and the mesh came out in 3 rolls. Once unrolled it was easy to get all of the debris out and put it back. I used my mig welder to tack it back together where it was originally spot welded.

	Liquid steel, epoxy, or put it in place and forget it. It can't get out without removing the oil cup, so it won't go anywhere.

	On my WD that retainer wasn't spotted in place (maybe taken apart before my time). It was just pushed into place and held in with...... what I don't remember. I unrolled the steel mesh and cleaned it in a parts washer. The housing I took over to a NAPA shop that had some kind of jet wash (I don't remember what they called the washer for sure) that they used for cleaning carburators,I think (it's been about 20 years ago). I didn't get to see the washer but when I picked up the housing it was super clean inside. Like I mentioned it has been 20 years ago so I might not be remembering things exact.

	I pop riveted mine back on but it is a snug enough fit that I completely believe others who say the fasteners are not needed

	As has been mentioned elsewhere on the forum, one way to clean out organic matter is to soak the mesh rolls in carb cleaner, torch them, let cool, kock out the ashes, then lightly oil. this is what I did, but it was nowhere near as bad as sugarmaker's.
