With social distancing my wife has gone back to teaching. A small school of less than a 60 students all together. That is how it is getting to have in person learning at all with our King's(Gov Gavin Newsome) permission.
She has less than 10 4th graders, 4 that come to class. The rest hiding at home. The computer thing has been a big pain to a retired teacher. One of the smart ass students at home uses "the signal went dead, and turns her computer off. The trouble is little sister in 1st grade never has trouble. She has tried talking to mom, but this is her "princess never does wrong".  Mom also just got herself elected to the school board. 
In frustration my Wonderful showed me some work from "princess". Halve way through the hand writing changed, (I am slow and had to have it pointed out) but no expert needed to see it was different. Good that mom knows how to do the work. 
The oldest grand daughter was excepted to a gifted school. But her teachers have stated they will not come back to a classroom as long as there is a chance of catching covid. She is one of the few that will not be greatly harmed by no school as she has a thirst for knowledge and knowing how to read she will learn something. Her brother not so much being in 1st grade and just starting to read.
Thankfully some states have real school, but will we now close them down too.
Pray for the young skulls full of mush, that can give them a education. This could be down hill right into the swamp.

My wife is a 5th grade teacher and absolutely hates it. We're hoping the farm can make enough that she can quit. Very similar story. No parental support, no administrative support at school.

Tyler, just like driving a school bus there is NO WAY I would be a teacher in a government school. I appreciate and admire those like your bride who want to teach and are not there to just draw a paycheck. But they have no support from administrators or parents these days and the little brats know it. The teachers are underpaid and the administrators are overpaid JMHO.

No "in person learning" is going to make it very hard for a lot of kids... Our small community in Illinois has school OPEN.. Kids went for about 6 weeks, couple teachers got sick so shut down for 14 days... Then back to school for the last 3 weeks. Hope it lasts... 3rd grader does OK on the computer by himself.. kindergarden is tough.. They dont listen, cant read, and attention span is short without DIRECT teacher.
I feel sorry for the kids downtown Chitcago who are doing REMOTE Learning... Parents could not care less... some of them cant read or write anyway... how is that helping the kid.

If I had a farm, I'd rather grow lots of veggies and pull weeds than be a teacher. Wife made almost 3000 Canucks on 1/8th acreas well as filling 3 big freezers and feeding neighbours/friends. Planted 400 garlics yesterday for next seasons crop.
Whole lot less stress 'playing in the dirt' than in a classroom

To explain a bit more, the REAL teacher took extended maternity leave. They started (what my daughter with a kindergartener at this calls fake school ) school with a long term substitute. When the King gave permission to do "in classroom" mid Oct they needed another teacher as to have another classroom so kids are over 6 feet apart. That's where my wife got called.
Next week is report card day, the sub that started the year has given my wife nothing as far as what she did about grading before my wife came on board. My wife is VERY UNPROGRECIVE, no work you failed. She is not sure of what to make of things and she likes black and white, NO GRAY areas.
When she unloads and I say you could quit, or give them a incomplete and after seeing what they do from now until next report card give the grade. I get the you better just leave before I get the frying pan after you look from her. So sad to think of the wasted year in all the kids life's and many adults as well. Just so power hungry people can manipulate the world.
Yes we needed some months back in March when it started so see how the virus affected different ages and things. But now it has become clear 99.9% of children are not affected by it. The biggest danger is they can pass it to other people as they don't get sick, so you don't know to stay away. What a mess the world is in. Much prayer is needed.

Kids are not learning at home, cousin looked in on some of her students and caught the parents doing homework as the kids sat playing video games. The use of Distance or online learning is about useless.

The no child left behind thing is the biggest complaint my wife has. If her kids don't even try to turn in an assignment the only thing she can do, per the administration, is give them a 60 and another opportunity to complete the work. Kids don't learn anything but the pass rate looks REALLY good. It's not all the kids though. She has some that she absolutely loves and praises. It's the select few that won't do crap that really ruin it for her

Failure IS an option regardless the Admin BS. Here the children do not turn in assignments get an I for Incomplete and at end of year will be failed.

The only thing I see wrong with that is the I instead of an F. We didn't get I's and I've only been out 20 years. Until mama and daddy start actually giving a damn nothing will change

Tyler, I fully agree. When my daughter was in elementary/middle school I could tell which kids were doing good w/o even knowing them. It was the kids whose parents were at the PTO meetings on a regular basis. If the parents don't care the kids surely won't. The breakdown of the traditional family and no home life is the cause of a lot of problems in our schools and society.

My daughter and SIL are middle school music teachers at the same school she is chorus and he is band, here they are doing hibred school, 1/2 of students in school Mon and Tue remote learning Wed., the other 1/2 Thursday and Friday. They see 1/2 of in school students on each of the 4 days of in person instruction, which relates the students getting band or chorus 1 time a week, which means every 5 weeks they get 1 week of instruction. Oh yeah,, and they can only sing or play instruments 30 min out of a 90 min. class period. It is really difficult on teachers and students alike...........Tim

My youngest is a junior in high school and they just went back to "hybrid" learning, 2 days in school- 1/2 the class, 3 days out at home.
My wife works at the elementary school and they are keeping the kids 4 days a week. Rumor has it that the administration decided that the younger students could be in school with masks or in day care without masks and "in school" would be best.

Its truly unfortunate for these kids. They need those Proms football games, socializing in school. Graduation gives most of them a feeling of accomplishment. Scouting and FFA has done my 3 grandsons a whole lotta good. Its taught them there are rewards for accomplishments. #1 grandson got pretty high up in state FFA, #2 grandson is gonna get his Eagle scout rank next week. He was on a heck of a good football team this year. He's worked like a dog for that. Is now an assistant scoutmaster. #3 grandson in 7th grade sweeps up at the local bike shop, blows snow for all the old coots in his neighbor hood. He don't live close to me. And all 3 of them are showing up here this weekend to cut and split firewood.
