OK,,could not find my thread on the Wife's ailments, so,,,,,,without goin into a whole page of re-hashin (some say I tend to be long winded),,,I'll start here,,,,
The Director of Home Health Services has discharged the wife from all Physical and Occupational therapy as she is not physically able to participate with the therapy. She has suggested that we place her in "Home Hospice Care" (HHC) that will enable her to qualify for more in depth Medicare benefits that she does not qualify for at this point. I was shocked to hear thet dreaded word "Hospice" as I thought that signified "end of life",,,the wife did not like the suggestion either,,!! The director explained that there were several kinds of Hospice and hers did not necessarily mean end of life. She stated she needs more help at home that I am not able to give her like they can. We had a phone conference with the 5 boys and they all agreed that it was better for Mom. The ONLY'IST thing I am kinda concerned with is that she would have to agree that all future health care needs would be supplied by the HHC nurses that would be available whenever we called. The HHC has a MD available should she require that. All other needs would be supplied by the RN's, Pa's or CNP. HHC would provide a new Hospital bed, which would be a great help, and all other health care items.
I asked if her follow-up on the Prosthesis would still be available and she told me definately YES.
Have any of Ya'll had any experience with this sort of issue,,??? Good,,Bad,,,???

Joe,
Wishing the best for your wife and you and the family in this situation. Sounds like the right move to get the care she needs. Tough choices.

I think we can help because I believe prayer works. So more prayers for you and your wife. But, no we cannot decide  for you. Sorry you have to go through all the pain and hand wringing.

Be as long winded as you got to be, cause getting things out of your head and asking friends for ideas that you may not have  come up with yet may help.

Gosh, Joe. From the outside that doesn't sound good. I have no real experience in this area, but a year and 1/2 ago, my best friend/neighbor went on hospice. I was there every day to help what little I could, but mostly just kept him company and an ear to listen. He was in the latter stages of life and Hospice, though all were very nice and attempted to help really weren't there enough to really provide the care he required. He held on for six months but the last two were very depressing for me. I just couldn't provide the help he needed so it left me considerably depressed for not being able to help enough. Your wife's situation is entirely different so I would expect a much better outlook for success. May God be with you and the Mrs. and provide the support, strength, and positive attitude to make this journey successful. God Bless

My friends wife just passed.  They had that and were very pleased with the service.    They stated that the care she received was a lot better than any previous care.

Ray, I fully agree. Praying should be one of the first things we do instead of the last as it very often is.

Joe, continuing to lift you and your wife up in prayer. God ways are not our ways and His thoughts not our thoughts. As promised He will heal His children, maybe not in this life but in the next it is guaranteed. Having your life partner go through this is tough on both of you. Feel free to post on here as often and as long as you like. Sharing your cares, concerns, and fears with your Orange family here will help. May God give both of you strength and comfort as you travel through this storm in your life together.
Just an old country boy saved by the grace of God.

Les Royer,,,,,,,,,you are the greatest,,,!!  I just got thru talkin with Linda and she has allayed my fears and concerns and convinced me to go ahead with the Home Hospice Care. I figured it was prolly what we should do but just needed somebody from the health care profession to explain it better. I had talked with my older Brother, the Dr. in Milwaukee but he had not had too much experience with it to say.
Les,,,I sure appreciate your efforts and Sure glad I called her. By the way,,,does she know you are on the puter this late,,,?? I asked to talk to you but,,,,,,,she said,,"Oh he's fast asleep,,he goes to bed bout 9",,,,?WinkWink

how bouts an "I" beam across the bedroom ceiling, with a HF remote controlled winch that has a swing set seat on it? then it can roll over to where it's needed! or you could just get her a "lift" chair, we bought one for me, and it's been my "bed" for a year now, it's that comfy! my back don't hurt while i'm in that chair! and it raises up so I can just walk out of it!

DJ, Been reading what others have said, and they prolly know more than I do...
The onlyiest thing I gets a bit sceary in this is, "she would have to agree that all future health care needs would be supplied by the HHC nurses " ... what does it entail?, is this a once accept agreement, a forever agreement to the end? Can't switch doctors if you think they aren't giving good enough care...or maybe over medicating... whats the devils in the fine print?  Can you make this a year by year contract?Okay nuff of my rattlin. Hope and prayers to you And your luv there.

Hey Shameless,,your idea is kinda what my engineering mind has been tossin around in my head.  The hardest part of the 4 "transfers" when she has to go to bathroom or shower, is from the bed to wheel chair, then from wheel chair back to bed. I been thinkin to make a 24"X64" rectangle out of 2X2 light angle iron on ceiling and hang a "T" handle from it at the right height so she can grab it to pull herself up to help me get her from bed to wheel chair. As it is now,,the wheel chair and bed are pretty much same height so she doesn't have anything to grab hold of, and is actually havin to "push" herself up off wheel chair and that is not much help. The 64" length would catch at least 4 ceiling trusses and use screws instead of nails,,,?? Whatcha think,,??
The transfer from wheel chair to potty and back are much easier as I installed a "grab bar" on wall next to potty and is high enough that she can grab it and pull herself up and sure makes it lots easier on poor old Joe,,,,,

Hey JC,,,actually the "agreement" is on a day by day option as she told us if for any reason we are not satisfied, we can opt out at any time but she does elaborate that since Medicare will be paying all the bills, they are going to do everything to keep her AND MEDICARE happy. In talking with ole Les's wife last night, her many years of being a nurse has given her an up close look at this program and like everybody else has told us, the HHC team makes every attempt at keeping her comfortable. I think she will benefit from this so it's worth a try, The Director also told us, the very first thing they will do is get her a hospital bed and that will help many wonderfuls,,,,,,,

Joe,  I gots the most awkwArd sleep;in hours. I sleep when I'm tired an I'm awake when I ain't. I take a lot of naps in my truck. I might be in the shop at 3am. You just never know. The Menards parking lot iz one of my favorite nappin spots. I nap a lot in my office too. But my problem izz, if I don't spend enuf time laying flat, my legs gits to swelling up, but if'n I'm in thet bed for 8 to 10 hours, my back kills me and I can't move around to good for 3 hours after. It feels so good to lay down, but 9 hours later I'm a little grouchy. I ain't found the answer yet. We gots 3 furnished bedrooms an I've tried every mattress in the house. It don't seem to matter. I'm curious about thet apparatus Shameless has got.
I still gots my A/C but it's clear out in the barn now.

one of my friends was in a wheelchair all the time, he had a board ( I never measured it) that he used to transfer himself from the chair to the drivers seat in his car. in or out. he carried that board with him always, had a pocket on the side of his chair to carry it. it appeared to be about the size of a 1x8, maybe a little thinner...thick wise. Les...I've also tried a lot of different mattress's, with the same results you are having. I just use my lift chair now. we got ours at a furniture store in Fremont NE...i'll think of the name and post it. they offer a lot of extras that NE Furniture Mart don't. and they have a BIG inventory of different ones. my old lady....oooops….I mean the loving wife wants one now, so we'll go gits her one soon. Joe...me thinks you both should gits a lift chair too!

My wife has a brother-in-law that uses one of the board the Shameless is talkin about, I suppose his wife could use it to get his attention also. The HHC care that we have heard of around here has been great to the people theys taken care of, have not heard any complaints. Prayer for you and your wife, it's a big decision to make, best of luck to you.

My Mother got one of them elevating chairs and LOVES it.  Then us kids decided she didn't need it anymore and told her we were getting rid of it.  Boy did we get some looks outa her!!  Then when my BIL and I brought the new one in she was gonna have a fit!!  UNTIL she found out that it was still a lifting chair, but ALSO had a full body massage to it.  She doesn't sleep in it (yet) but she sure was glad we got rid of the old one.
