Is there a consensus on the best lubricants for a WD, run mostly in warm/hot weather? For a tractor with an unknown history, would it be prudent to drain everything and replace it with new whatever?

Use 821 or universal hydraulic in every thing except engine.      MACK

There is a great debate about engine oil with unknown conditions. If there is a lot of sludge, running a modern regular oil will gradually clean it out and it may start leaking if seals are worn. Running a non-detergent oil will not clean it out and if you are trying to just get by is a band-aid at best. It depends on what you are using it for and what you are willing to spend to fix it going forward. 15W40 Rotella diesel oil is a good choice for warmer weather modern oil, and I would personally run that or another detergent oil and fix leaks properly if they happen.

If you suspect water or antifreeze could be in the oil drain it. Otherwise if it's not cruddy looking run it and warm it up and then change it. IMO.
